Badminton Out & About: Highland Park v Como Park

HIGHLAND PARK 6, COMO PARK 1

In the battle of Parks it was host Highland over Como 6-1. The lineups of these two teams have been altered during the week; Highland returned to their traditional singles line up while Como was still experimenting. One of the experiments with Talia moving from doubles to second singles ended in a withdrawl in the second set with Sunshine Vang. The Scots controlled the singles portion of the contest with five sets with margins over ten. Only at fourth singles did Como manage a set win. Como’s doubles line up today was altered several ways. Gay Nee, usually at first doubles was moved to third to partner with Pah Meh. Gay Nee’s usual partner, Lah Shar, was not available. San San moved to first doubles. She had played at third doubles during the year. HP also had some shifts at doubles with Satori moving back to first doubles with Chor. Katia and Ellie, who have been at second doubles, moved to third. Doubles proved to be the most competitive of the two with HP squeaking by with a cumulative 0.57 margin. Five of the seven sets in doubles were decided by three points or less.

FIRST SINGLES

Neul 2, Pa Nra 0
(19-11, 21-14)

At the start of the week both these players were playing second singles. Today they were back at their familiar location. And for the second contest this year Neul Jeong-McDonnel beat Pa Nra. In the first match up Pa Nra’s second set, a 23-21 loss, indicated that the rematch might be tight. Today was not going to be a repeat of that tight finish. Neul’s side out game combined with her winner advantage was more than enough for separation. The winners of choice for Neul came with 10 soft drives and nine clears. I tracked a new category today in an experiment: set up shots that the opponent had errors on. Of the 13 Pa Nra errors, 8 were off of clears by Neul, 2 came on short serves (in the net), 1 each on a drive, a soft drive, and a deep serve. For 9 Neul errors, Pa Nra set up 5 with clears, 2 soft drives, one short serve, and one drive. The six service errors by Neul are all on her to bring her total error count to 15. Pa Nra’s first three points of the first set were all on Neul service errors.

Counting again was an issue—in the first set and right at the end at that. The first set had Neul up 11-3. I though I hear 18-11 and the set then ended on the next point. The second set had no counting errors. Pa Nra held a 7-6 lead when Neul responded with her second run of the set to pull in front 9-7. The ability to score on serve kept Neul expanding her lead. A run of four on her eighth service had her on the cusp at 19-11. All four of those points were winners, and all five strokes or longer, an indication of higher level of competition.
