Badminton Out & About: Roosevelt 6, Edison 1

ROOSEVELT 6, EDISON 1

The first out & about this year happened today, Thursday, March 23, 2023. My schedule cleared up and so it was off for some Minneapolis conference action. The badminton scene has been active for about a week now. Conference action has occurred in both cities. Non Con action has percolated throughout the area.

Today host Roosevelt beat Edison in Minneapolis action only falling at first singles. The rest of the match went all Teddies with nine double digit margins in the set totals at both singles and doubles. Edison’s usual number two was missing and that impacted the rest of the singles line up.

The other big news of the day is the addition of another school (there could be more) with Fridley. The Tigers have one game under their belt with Edison as their first opponent. The Tommies were victorious in that match 7-0. There are a few more contests on the docket for Fridley.

FIRST SINGLES

Amelia LARSON 2, Abi MARTINEZ 0 (21-5, 21-12)

Amelia Larson prevented a Teddie sweep with a two set win over Abi Martinez. The Tommie took advantage of 27-6 winner margin in putting together her victory. Larson grabbed command right from the start and never trailed in any set. Seven of her first nine points in the first set were winners. All first seven points in the second went as winners. The difference between the two sets is the stroke count zoomed up. Larson needed 30 more strokes in the second set to get to 21 points. Larson also closed fast. Martinez stayed close in the second set with a five point run to make it ten all. A six stroke smash turned the tide and Larson tacked on six more to lead 17-10. In that seven point run Martinez suffered five hitting errors. Larson’s 11 clears paved the way to victory with nine drives trailing close behind.
