Badminton Out & About: Math & Science 4, Tartan 3

MATH & SCIENCE 4, TARTAN 3

Math & Science swept the doubles and added a third singles win that lasted three sets in a win over Tartan in east metro action on Thursday. The Dragons dominated the doubles winning all six sets by over ten points each. The singles line up for M&S was markedly different from last week when I charted them in the win over Hmong College Prep Academy. First singles Akua Yeboah was out of town and second singles Emily Balandin rolled her ankle, and was in a walking boot. That meant third singles Emily Nguyen was now at the first spot. Amanda Dsouza, at third singles today for M&S, had a solid third set at third singles.

Math & Science is 3-0 on the season; Tartan moves to 1-2.

FIRST SINGLES

KALIA XIONG 2, EMILY NGUYEN 0 (21-10, 21-15)

Tartan’s Kalia Xiong picked up her first win of 2023 in a two set victory over Emily Nguyen. Both players seemed to be playing with a serve clock in the microseconds (not the 30 seconds used by baseball this year). With the rushed nature of the match neither player was able to get the side outs quickly. The amount of services in the match usually corresponds to one set in other matches I charted this season. For example, in the Johnson/Washington first singles match in the third set Johnson had 14 services. Xiong was able to parlay that advantage with eight runs out of a potential ten.

One category with overwhelming clarity was on the winner side of the ledger. There Xiong racked up 25. Xiong shined with six aces, the highest totals I have charted this year. Xiong also had six winners on clears and on smashes.

An oddity in this match was that Nguyen jumped out to 4-0 leads in both sets. It was Xiong that closed out strongly with the last six points in the first set and a 10-1 finish across two services in the second set.

The speed of the match was indicative of stroke count as well with 28 of the 67 points (42%) of all points two strokes or less. Neither player scored a winner on a two stroke count. Errors on the two strokes were a different matter. Nguyen delivered eight and Xiong seven points to the other player. Xiong’s were mainly clear attempts, Nguyen’s tended to be soft drives that were either wide or in the net.
