Badminton Out & About: Kennedy 7, Fridley 0

KENNEDY 7, FRIDLEY 0

Kennedy and Fridley, both officially in the Tri-Metro conference, met for the first time. Fridley is the 28th school to join the badminton world and it was their second contest. The Tigers have over 20 players dipping their collective toes in the competitive world. The Eagles, in year eight of their program, have over 60 players and they handed the Tigers a 7-0 loss. As a first year program there will be plenty of learning opportunities. Today was one. The format was not the traditional four singles and three doubles. What was agreed to was one round where all players played singles. There was no official doubles.

Fridley will have two more events next week to wrap up their season.

With these two schools charted that brings me up to 82% (23 of the 28). Two more are due to be charted Thursday leaving three to go for the year. After the list is complete it is dealer’s choice.

FIRST SINGLES

MORGAN AUFDENKAMP 2, CATHERINE 0 (21-10, 21-3)

Kennedy’s Morgan Aufdenkamp sided out at an 82% clip in a two set win over Catherine of Fridley. Aufdenkamp also had a big advantage in winners (+24). She either equaled or exceeded Catherine’s total winner count on four of the subsets with the smash scoring nine times.

Set one was the most competitive with the score at 9-6 when Aufdenkamp ran off a 9-1 run over the course of her sixth and seventh service making it 19-7 (my count—they were off by one). Catherine got her only run of the day right after to close the gap to 19-10. All three of those points came via Aufdenkamp errors. Set two was over quickly. On Aufdenkamp’s second service she erupted for a dozen straight points. She used the three count—the response to the serve, or the set up point—-for seven winners in that run, including the last five. Her third service added six more (including the side out). Catherine held off one match  point before a three stroke error ended the match.
