TRINITY 7, EAGLE RIDGE ACADEMY 0

For the first time in a couple of weeks there were contests held on Friday. My option today was to travel to Eagan to check out Eagle Ridge Academy, the guests of Trinity of River Ridge. The host Hawks swept the second year program Gryphons all in two sets. Seven times Trinity held ERA to single digits in sets. The closest set today came at fourth singles in the second set when Parinitha reached 15 points.

With ERA I have now seen 27 of the 28 teams playing badminton this year (96.4%). And just in the nick of time. Eagle Ridge does not have another scheduled match. Their next event will be the individual portion of the state tournament.

FIRST SINGLES

MAGGIE KOCON, JOSHNA 2-0 (20-11, 21-10)

Trinity’s Maggie Kocon worked on a variety of shots in the two set win over Joshna. Kocon had opportunities to smash, but passed them up to further work on her game. Kocon never trailed today, and only allowed one run. Kocon also had large advantages in service points (+20); winners (+28); and odd stroke winners (+23). Joshna did out ace Kocon 2-0. The problem for Joshna was she only added two more winners to her totals. Joshna also led in service errors 4-0.

For some reason the scores never added up to the “official” score  I had one less point for Kocon in the first set; one more for Joshna in the second set.

In the first set Kocon scored her first run on her second service after Joshna’s missed serve. All four points that followed were winners including two soft drives. That was the winner of choice today for Kocon who ended up with 11. Joshna’s only run of the match came on her fifth service with four points narrowing the gap to 12-9. Kocon responded with a run on her next to services.

Kocon opened the second set with three straight points, all winners, two on the third stroke. It remained tight until Joshna’s only missed serve of the second set made it 11-8. Kocon then added seven points in her biggest run of the day to make it 18-8. Of those seven points six were winners, four on the third stroke.
