Quick synopsis of the marathon sessions on Thursday:

1. After the suburbs had their day in the spotlight Wednesday, St. Paul reasserted itself in the limelight taking both singles and doubles titles. Call it the day of Revenge. Both #1 Seeds, Sunshine Vang of Highland Park and Birdy Xiong and Alexis Xiong of Johnson duplicated their city titles earned a week before.
2. Both #1 seeds bounced back from unexpected losses in the team portion of the state tournament on Wednesday. For the Johnson pair it was their first nick all year. For Vang It was her first loss since March 28. Ironically today both #1 seeds beat their foes that collared them with a loss yesterday. Both did it in two sets, Vang in the semis; The Xiong duo in the title match. Vang finished the day with 10 set wins and her only set loss in the three setter title game. The Johnson duo also had a 10-1 mark on the day. Their set loss came in the semis to Harding’s 1.
3. There were upsets. In the singles division three players made the quarterfinals from the 9, 11, and 12 position. And in the semis Phlower Vang of Highland Park bumped off Burnsville’s #2 seed Maddie Blackbourn in three sets. Como Park in doubles as a 12 cracked the final eight.
4. There were marathon matches. In the quarterfinals and final rounds there were four three setters of the eight matches played. There were two at the doubles level. Even at the sweet 16 round three sets was happening. There were two in singles, four in doubles. It seemed that court eight was hexed, cursed, or haunted by marathon matches. One epic battle on that court was Sandy Vang of Johnson and Corrina Benson of Burnsville going tooth and nail 29-27 in the final frame. Highland Park edged out Eden Prairie in doubles also by the stratospheric 29-27 score in the third set. All told there were 22 extra point sets today. Trailing right behind were eleven 21-19 finishes.
5. As for history Sunshine Vang kept the Scots holding the singles title. Last year Haeul Jeong McDonell won the title. This is Highland Park’s third singles title overall. Johnson now ties Harding for most doubles’ titles with seven each. Birdy Xiong last year was runner up. This year she flipped that script. All seven of Johnson’s wins have come in the last dozen years.
