Badminton Out & About: Numbers from the State Singles & Doubles; plus Final Team Records 2023

END OF THE YEAR WRAP

Here are some interesting stats from the state individual tournaments.

SINGLES

In the first set five players lost and came back and won.

Thirteen matches lasted three sets.

Two players won twice in three sets—-Sandy Vang of Johnson and Phlower Vang of Highland Park. Phlower lost to Sandy in the third place match. That was her third triple set match of the day.

The longest scoring third set (any set) was in the quarterfinals when Sandy Vang of Johnson beat Corinna Benson of Burnsville 29-27 in the third set.

The average scores for sets
1: 20.6 to 13.3, three sets went to extra points
2: 20.4 to 12.8, four sets went to extra points
3: 21.7 to 16.23, two sets went to extra points.

DOUBLES

In the first set three pairs lost and came back to win.

Two matches went on to three sets.

Faith Moua and Lena Nguyen of Johnson won twice in three sets, but then an injury withdrawal forced the pair to withdraw in the semis and third place match.

The longest third set matched the singles at 29-27. Notching 29 were Ellie Boudet & Katia Gercheva of Highland Park. On the short end (if 27 can be considered short) was Eden Prairie’s Sani Deshmukh and Ishani Nandan. Both were singles players until the state tournament Thursday—one of several singles pairings formed into doubles teams.

The average scores for sets
1: 20.7 to 11.96, two sets went to extra points, four matches were forfeit /withdrawls
2: 20.3 to 12.09, two sets went to extra points
3: 22.2 to 16.3, another two sets went to extra points.
