MN GBB 2023-24: The Week That Was #11 Plus Seeding the State (and a Look at)

For the week:

Seven games, 11 new teams (3 duplicates), 104 new players, 998.1 miles

For the season: 105 games, 163 teams (11 duplicates), 1635 players, 7719 miles

Or to El Espinal, Los Santos Province, Panama and back

The week started off in the doldrums but finished in a flurry. Specifically looking at the pp100s the finish was an exclamation point. The highlight at the start of the week was the finish at Maple River with a steal layup at the buzzer breaking the tie with Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. This was a dilemma game. Some games I choose, and it is quite easy. AAAA teams get the priority (especially in December) just to clear the way for the other classes as the months go on. Tuesday was a choice between MR, which was only 1:45 away from home, plus the game was the first part of a girl / boy doubleheader meaning I would get home before 9. The other option was going to Fosston. That was a four-hour journey, plus that game would start at 7:30 meaning I would return back home probably around 1 am. That game too ended in a two-point victory.

Now with the calendar running out my choices have become forced. I hope to see Fosston and the rest of the 8A teams during sections. It is a gamble because the weather is unknown. Also unknown is the highest team left on the table. 200 is a fantasy. 150 is potentially doable, but my guess is that 130 or 140 is more attainable.

This week, besides the gold rush at the end, featured a lot of 8AA and Heart O’Lakes teams. I am still not quite wrapped up on the 8AA line up. Mississippi 8 was also in the rotation. What surprises me this year is the mid to lower level M8 teams have not cracked 200. I was able to get to 100% of the 25s this week. Only one team left at 75. Only four left at 100. Six left for 110.

I made it to Maple River (as stated previously) for the first time in their new school. I had charted a game previously in their old building. This marks the second straight week of a new venue for me. Breckenridge last week was a first.

REAR VIEW MIRROR

MONDAY: Hawley 47, Crookston 28

The Nuggets rolled over Crookston Monday. The Pirates’ season took a hit when senior guard Halle Winjum knee was injured preventing her from playing her final high school season. Crookston did hold a 15-14 lead with five minutes left in the first half. But by the break Hawley went on a 9-2 run to lead 23-17. A little after two minutes expired in the second half Hawley had enough to win. Junior guard Isabel Steer led the Nuggets with 24 points, just four short of the entire Crookston team.

TUESDAY: Maple River 54, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 52

The Eagles pulled out a victory with 7.3 seconds left in regulation. Visiting WEM twice requested timeout as they had to go the length of the floor. MR had not pressed until that time. The Buccaneers changed their inbounds situation, but the result was a steal by Claire McGregor followed by a layup at the buzzer by Bria Cole.

This game was tight throughout the second half. MR was in an eleven-point hole in the first half (25-14) with five minutes left in the half. The host Eagles managed to tie it at 31, but Claire Bohlen scored an &1 with 6.3 seconds left to give WEM the lead 34-31 at the break. There were three lead changes in the second half, the last coming on a triple by McGregor to make it 52-50. A pair of free throws by Bohlen, who led both teams with 15 points, with 28.7 tied the game. MR misfired on a three attempt as the 35 second clock neared the end. That resulted in a dead ball rebound and the setting for the last second heroics.

MR was helped by balanced contributions from behind the arc. Five different players delivered seven 3s.

WEDNESDAY: St. Paul Como Park 59, St. Paul Washington/Johnson 19

This game was not on my radar to start the day. Apparently refs did not show up on Tuesday postponing the game 24 hours. Washington (and Johnson) are (or were) in the top 200 at the time and with the paltry four game slate that day it was the best available game to cross teams off the list. I was ready to go to watch Lakeville North and Eden Prairie….oh well. This was not a game full of mystery. The Cougars pounced with 20 steals and put running time on the host Eagles.

Washington (and Johnson) are soon to exit the 200s….they were at #184 prior to this game.

THURSDAY: Park-Cottage Grove 42, Irondale 31

This was another one-fer type game with PCG in the hunt. Irondale, with their extensive losing streak stretching across two seasons, was not in the hunt for 200. Still an important game to cross off two AAAA teams. This game, plus Cambridge-Isanti on Friday inched me closer to a complete AAAA set—-only two to go. I can safely assure you all 57 will be charted prior to sections.

Both these teams made extensive use of the 35 seconds in the shot clock. Hence the low score. The Wolfpack only had 51 possessions for the entire game. This is the lowest recorded this year. Coming into the week 57 was the bottom. This whole week had a milk the clock vibe. Hawley/Crookston was right at the previous bottom at 57. Pelican Rapids/Sauk Centre were at 55.

The deliberate nature of this game gave PCG the win. They shot 54% in 2s with 6-2 eighth grader Mesa Jameson providing a game high 18 points. She only missed one shot in 2s and made both free throws. She also scooped up a dozen defensive stops. She becomes only the third eighth grader to make the 31 Club this season. The Knights continue to search for their first win. With four minutes left Irondale was within striking distance trailing 35-29. They fouled on the next PCG possession which pushed the Wolfpack’s lead back to eight.

FRIDAY: Cambridge-Isanti 54, Monticello 49

The visiting Bluejackets threw a wrench into the Mississippi 8 race with a come from behind win. The Magic built an eleven-point first half lead only to see it vanish. The hosts still led by seven at the break. Monticello’s offense did a disappearing act at the start of the second half with CI enjoying a 14-2 start. The first lead in the second stanza (35-32) came on a triple by reserve Carley Halstensgard, her second in four possessions. The lead grew to seven (46-39) with 3:13 left. Aubrey Krienke did cut the margin to one possession on her 3 for the Magic, but with 8.1 ticks to go Bre Knight, who led both teams with 19 points, cashed in two free throws for insurance. She made eleven free throws total for the night.

SATURDAY

The Breakdown took their traveling Saturday feature another hour and forty minutes further up the road from St. Michael-Albertville the previous Saturday to Alexandria. These two games helped save week 11 from the 70s with two teams cracking the centurion mark.

GAME 1: Pelican Rapids 65, Sauk Centre 46

The Vikings used hot shooting from 3 point land and utilized more second chance opportunities outrebounding the taller Mainstreeters 19-6 on the offensive boards. PR made eleven 3s in the contest, four more than SC. Early on it appeared that the game would be matched shot for shot. First PR jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Then SC used a 13-3 advantage to pull ahead. It was 20 all with 9:35 left in the half. SC hit a brick wall at that point as PR zoomed by with an 18-5 finish to the half to lead 38-25. A 10-4 start to the second half made it 28-9 over that stretch. The needle did not move much from that spread. The one two punch of Morgan Korf (25) and Ellie Welch (20) nearly outscored SC themselves. PR had a best 118.2 for the week, but just the starters alone the Vikings out did that to 122.9.

GAME 2: Albany 81, Becker 65

This was the “best” game of the week when measuring the losing team’s pp100. Albany was a centurion (115.7, good for second for the week) and showed why they are a force to be thought about in the AA race with balanced scoring—four players in double figures. On the flip side the Bulldogs had a tent pole mega performance from Alexis Rose. The senior was on fire and there was no fire extinguisher. She had 41 points with a personal 132.3 pp100 with six 3s in the mix. As good as Rose was Albany’s Kylan Gerads was no shrinking violet with a pp100 of 153.3. Teammate Alyssa Sand was also hot with 138.5. Together they joined the 41 Club, or in Gerads case, one point away. But Rose was in the stratosphere with a 51 Club effort of 57. Not only did she score 41, but she was 12/15 on her set up passes (meaning she had a hand in 63 of the points). She also got the kjasr triple double with 11 d stops. This game was much closer than it appeared. Albany led 46-44 with eleven minutes left after a 3 from Madison Bass (pass via Rose). Albany then had two straight possessions where Savanna Pelzer cashed in 3s and they were back in control.

With the unsettled nature of 5AAA the Bulldogs might find their way back to the big dance.

A LOOK AT 3AAAA, 5AAAA, 7AAAA AND THE SUBURBAN EAST CONFERENCE

Here is a look at three more AAAA sections: 3,5 & 7 (bringing the totals now to six completed) plus the Suburban East Conference making for five completions in that category.

A LOOK AT: SECTION 3AAAA

School PP100
Rosemount 138.1
Hastings 89.1
Burnsville 88.2
Eastview 83.3
Park Cottage Grove 82.4
Eagan 58.6
Bloomington Jefferson 50.7
Ave 84.34

Charting Park-Cottage Grove completes this seven-team section. For the most part it is based in the south with Dakota County being the main source of schools (with PCG and Bloomington Jefferson the exceptions). It has a strong South Suburban Conference feel (again with PCG & BJ exceptions). This year the mark is 4-3 when I charted. This section is now the front runner for the “best” section based on pp100 with 84.34 edging past 1AAAA. Rosemount smashed the pp100 in their win back in December at Woodbury when I charted them with a 138.1. That mark is not only the best in section 3AAAA, but in all of AAAA and indeed the best mark all season regardless of class.

Six of the schools in this section have made the big dance. Eagan broke their jinx last year. The only one missing out so far is PCG. There have been ten state titles coming from this section, with four in the four-class era starting in 1997, Eastview is the latest champ in 2018.

The 31 Club only has two members: Braja Torry of Eastview is the tops at 39; 6-2 eighth grader Mesa Jameson of PCG joined her on Thursday night with 34 at Irondale. She was 6/7 from 2s and raked in a dozen defensive stops. It is generally harder to make the 31 Club when your team only gets to 42 points (and the Wolfpack won).

A LOOK AT: SECTION 5AAAA

School PP100
Maple Grove 96.9
Champlin Park 89.2
Spring Lake Park 86.4
Park Center 79.7
Mounds View 79.1
Irondale 59.6
Osseo 50
Totals 77.27

Section 5AAAA covers a northern swath of the metro stretching from Maple Grove in the west over to Mounds View on the east end. Most of the schools in this section belong to the Northwest Suburban. The Mounds View schools (MV & Irondale) are in the Suburban East. This section also crosses three counties, with Hennepin County home to four.

When charting this year 5AAAA is 4-3. Their pp100 is 77.27 putting them at fourth place of the AAAA sections. Maple Grove, despite their loss to Hopkins last Saturday, is the top pp100 with 96.9. The Crimson showed their skill level keeping their score up. Again, it is all about quality.

Every school in this section has made state. Not every school has made state in the four-class era, however. Spring Lake Park has yet to go since 1997. Only two of the schools have state titles. Osseo and Park Center both have a pair, but PC’s, even though they are in the four-class era, came when the Pirates were in AAA. The Orioles’ last title, and only title in the four-class era, came in 2000 (BTW I was assisting there back then).

Three players have joined the 31 Club this season with Brianna Nusbaum of Spring Lake Park the leader at 39. The other two are Jordan Ode of MG and Bria Stenstrom of MV.

A LOOK AT: SECTION 7AAAA

School PP100
Cambridge-Isanti 91.5
Blaine 82.9
Andover 75.4
Centennial 72.9
Anoka 71.8
Forest Lake 69.1
Duluth East 32.9
Totals 70.93

Section 7AAAA is Anoka County and points north stretching all the way to Duluth. This is the second section with a heavy dose of Northwest Suburban. Four of the schools belong to that league. Indeed three of them belong to one school district—Anoka-Hennepin. With Coon Rapids dropping to AAA that makes the section a little less so.

7AAA is only 2-5 when being charted this season, the lowest of the bunch. It also comes in with the lowest pp100 with 70.93. Without the boost of Cambridge-Isanti’s section best 91.5 on Friday it would have been even lower at 67.5. To be honest, young Duluth East’s 32.9 may have been a factor in the first game of the year right before Thanksgiving. With a couple of months of seasoning I am sure 32.9 would not happen again. No 7AAAAs are Centurions.

All seven schools in 7AAAA have made state. They are the only section without a title (CR had one, but they are now gone to 5AAA). 7AAAA members are strangers to deep runs at state. Blaine has made the final game, and that was to Lakeville back in 2001. Centennial lost to Minneapolis South in 2009. Duluth East also made the finals, but that was when they were in AAA and lost to Minneapolis North. More frequently it is one & done, or at least, one & off to consolation. Centennial and Duluth East tie for high honors with ten trips. All of the Cougars have been in the four class era.

There are five 31 Clubbers in 7AAAA with Evyn Eppinga of Anoka leading the pack with 38.

SECTION T IN STATE TITLES PP100 100+ 31C
3AAAA 6/7 36/20 10/3 84.34 1 2

8AAA       75.6 0 3
7AAAA All 40/30 0/0 79.93 0 5

3AAAA is the best at this stage edging out 1AAAA by fractions. Both are heavily influenced by the South Suburban. We are still awaiting the completion of sections 2 and 8 in AAAA. Things may alter when that is completed.

6AAAA leads in 31 Clubbers.

A LOOK AT: THE SUBURBAN EAST CONFERENCE

School Pp100
Roseville 98.6
Stillwater 87.5

Woodbury (x2) 74.95
Cretin-Derham Hall 71.1
Forest Lake 69.1
Irondale 59.6
East Ridge 55.1
Totals 76.1

Park-Cottage Grove and Irondale complete the Suburban East outlook. The Suburban East has had many variations of “Suburban.” At one point teams in the Northwest Suburban were part of it before exiting. Then the North Suburban came into existence (MV, Irondale, Roseville). Much of that morphed into the Twin City Suburban. The St. Paul Suburban (Woodbury, WBL, PCG) has a few schools in the mix. Even the vestiges of the old Skyline are present (Forest Lake, PCG).

This is one of the four AAAA heavy based conferences. Cretin-Derham Hall was in AAAA until moving down to section 3AAA this year. The record this season is 6-5 with a low 76.1 pp100 of the five conferences completed. Roseville tops the list with 98.6, but with the turmoil in a mid-season coaching change the Raiders have faltered lately. Four SECd schools failed to reach 70 when charted. Woodbury is the only school charted twice. Their window ranges from 94.3 to a season opening of 55.6.

Two schools have yet to make state, both in the South Washington County School district: East Ridge is a fairly new school. Park-Cottage Grove has not joined the Williams Arena crowd (or Met Sports Center for that matter). Woodbury and Cretin-Derham Hall both have titles, but the Raiders won theirs before being forced out of the St. Paul Conference. WBL, Stillwater, Roseville, and Mounds View have all played in the final game of the year garnering second place.

There are six 31 Clubbers with Mattea Henry of Woodbury getting to rarefied air with the 51 Club at 53. Two others made the 41 Club: Liana Buckhalton of Stillwater and Lauren Bengtson of Cretin-Derham Hall.

Suburban East 8/10 44/33 2/2 (2) 6-5 76.1 0

There are two more AAAA sections to go. Expect the South Suburban to join the conference roster. The Metro East and Northwest Suburban should also be finished soon.

PP100S

The weekend saved the pp100s this week. Up to Thursday the weekly pp100 was an anemic 68.89, good for a rock bottom finish in the weekly count. Friday and Saturday was like rocket fuel with 97.77. That would top the best only established last week by 14 points. Both Saturday winners at Alexandria, Pelican Rapids & Albany, made the Centurion list, and not barely, but both over 110. Two other teams, both Mississippi 8s made the 90s with Becker doing so in the loss to the Huskies.

For all that good news there were three teams not cracking 60 with St. Paul Washington/Johnson, a team that was supposed to be a top 200 caliber team below freezing at 28.4. My guess is they won’t be in the 200 in March. That helped explain the margin for the week. Winners were robust at 94.2. Losers 68.33. The spread? An unhealthy, not compelling 25.87. But with two running time type games that is the equation.

The “best” game, if you measure by competitive gap was the 3.1 in the last second win by Maple River over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Tuesday. That held attention. Friday’s Cambridge-Isanti v Monticello game also was a single digit spread. The “best” game using the losing team’s pp100 was the last game of the week with Becker’s 92.9 in the loss to Albany.

AAA had the best class mark of the week with 87.83 followed by AA at 80.09 and then AAAA unaccustomed to trailing finishing last with 77.83. Take out the two AA laggards and the numbers pop to a week’s best 93.87.

THE BEST THIS SEASON

10 Benilde-St. Margaret’s 105.6 83.9
11 Pelican Rapids 118.2 81.26

PR is the fourth AA team to lead the weekly charts. The Vikings have the highest AA score.

31 CLUB

Again, the strong finish lifted the 31 Club this week. Prior to Friday only three were onboard. With the high level of play Saturday five were added to the mix including two that reached higher levels. Alexis Rose of Becker topped all by joining the 51 Club with a 57 in the loss to Albany. The Huskies also had a higher level score with Alyssa Sand reaching the 41 Club on the nose.

There were five seniors, two juniors, a sophomore, and an eighth grader. Park-Cottage Grove’s 6-2 center/forward Mesa Jameson becomes the third player in that class to crack the code.

This list was heavy on AA entries with six total. Rose was the only AAA player. AAAA had two to make it. Albany and Pelican Rapids, both at the Alexandria Breakdown event had two players to join.

The seniors are asserting themselves with the end in sight. This is the third time in the last four weeks that a 2024 has led the parade. Rose is the third player whose team lost to lead the list. Rose has the third best mark among leaders, and the best overall senior mark passing up Mattea Henry who set the mark a week ago.

MILESTONES

Tori Oehrlein of Crosby-Ironton is the fastest to reach 3000 points. The 2026 grad (sophomore now) reached the mark in 101 games. Maddyn Greenway, Oehrlein’s opponent on Tuesday. Made the 3000 Club in her next contest against Maple Grove.

QRF

The finish line is in sight for the top 100. With four to go I would think that would be wrapped up in the next two weeks before the first round of sections (and the last real regular season week). With 12 regular season dates left (or 15 not counting section/regular season week) I believe I can get to about 130 before Feb 26 when sections start in earnest. Add in eleven or ten dates an outside shot at 160 is possible. Again the problem will be multiple to see teams on single dates. Right now I am in one-fer land where I cross off a potential team with the other team either having no chance at 200 (Park-Cottage Grove v Irondale for example) or the other team is already charted (Pelican Rapids v Sauk Centre). I had four one-fers this past week. It appears that I will have four or five this next week. Sigh.

I once thought there would be a decent chance to get to all AAA teams. Not anymore. Not enough calendar dates. Still A has the most ground to cover (obviously).

UNBEATEN

The last one standing is……Metro Schools College Prep????? The multiple question marks is because the reporting of scores is spotty. They were supposed to play Adams-Friendship from Wisconsin on Friday. Neither the MN Scores site or Wissports site has a result.

MSCP is scheduled for a game with St. Croix Prep on Wednesday according to their calendar site. BUT that is against the SCP C team. The SCP varsity will be traveling to Breck that night. How many varsity teams have they faced?

ONE LOSS

Since that zero loss is suspect, I will now track the one loss teams. We start this list with eight, half of which live in A. No one has one scar in AAAA. Can any of these teams make it to the finish line with one scratch? Albany has a chance. Perhaps Hancock. We know Fosston or Sacred Heart won’t be around in late March since both are in 8A—only one can survive.

AAAA: none
AAA: St. Peter, Delano
AA: Albany, Menahga
A: Southwest MN Christian, Hancock, Fosston, East Grand Forks Sacred Heart

Danger ahead: St. Peter hosts two important teams this week. On Tuesday Stewartville comes to town. Section 2AAA rival Marshall visits on Saturday afternoon.

Southwest MN Christian hosts Minneota on Tuesday in what could be a 3A final preview. Hancock plays Underwood Thursday in round two of their rivalry this year. The Owls won by one in the first meeting at Underwood.

WINLESS

Monday again turned its jinx beating magic up a notch with two more exiting this list. St. Charles beat LeRoy-Ostrander  41-29. Lyle-Pacelli beat Wabasha-Kellogg  49-33.

But a change/correction means Fond du Lac Ojibwe is back on the board.

Minnetonka has lost their last two games and now is looking at a #3 slot in AAAA. Hopkins continues their unbeaten Minnesota streak. Round two will be the final regular season game of the year on Friday, February 23. The land mines in the Lake are real.
