KENNEDY 4, TARTAN 3
Kennedy squeezed out a win over Tartan at home Wednesday 4-3. Last week Tartan beat North St. Paul by the same score. Today the script was flipped. The Eagles took all four singles just like the Titans did last week. And Tartan had three three set victories at doubles. Last week the Polars had all their points in doubles.
Doubles, as stated, had all three spots go three. Same with second singles. Both Katerina at second singles for Kennedy and the third doubles pair of Lavender Moua and Evylynn Yang from Tartan lost the first set and won the next two. Kennedy won all tight sets in singles going 3-0. Tartan held sway in doubles tight sets 2-1. Two sets went to extra points with Katerina getting 23 in the third set win over Sebrina Xiong, the third place finisher at the Edina Invitational on Tuesday. Kennedy’s first doubles also won a set in extra points, but it was their only set win.
This is Kennedy’s third win of the season against Suburban opponents. Tartan is 1-1 against the Suburban schools.

FIRST SINGLES
Morgan 2, Kalia XIONG 0

Morgan topped Kalia Xiong in two but the second set was much tighter than the first. In the first set Morgan’s side out game was strong limiting Xiong to just one point off serve and holding her to only one run for the entire match. Both players’ winner numbers were muted. Both players kept the bird lower preventing an outbreak of smashes. The drives were the favored choice by both with Morgan getting one more than Xiong 6-5. This game was also quick moving with just 12 rallies lasting five strokes or longer. This was especially true in the first set with only one rally reaching that mark.
Morgan broke free in the first set with her first run, breaking a six all tie. On her next service she tacked on four more points to build her lead out to 13-7. Xiong was unable to generate any life off her serve. She had a three-stroke drive on her third service for her only point off serve. For the next six services it was goose eggs, three of which were two stroke winners by Morgan.
In the second set the separation started with Morgan’s first run taking her to a 5-3 lead. But Xiong battled back. The winners did not come as frequently for Morgan as in the first set. Xiong’s only run gave her the lead at 12-9. The tide turned back to Morgan with a four-point burst out to 18-15. No winners were involved in that four-point sequence. Xiong held off set point twice before succumbing to a two-stroke soft drive.
One area that Xiong, who last week was the second singles, can improve on is her ability to hit the soft drive on the return serve. Four times in the second set Morgan made use of those hitting errors along with two from the first set.
Morgan moves to 2-1 on the year with her only loss coming to Jasmine Tran, yesterday’s second place finisher at the Edina Invitational.
