Badminton Out & About: Hmong College Prep Academy v Hiawatha Collegiate

HMONG COLLEGE PREP ACADEMY 7, HIAWATHA COLLEGIATE 0

For the second straight match I found myself in the EMAC conference and it was another sweep, this time for the home team. Last Friday it was Math & Science with the brooms. Today it was Hmong College Prep Academy over Hiawatha Collegiate. It was another mega sweep in that the set margins were steep—-15.87 in the singles, 11.00 in the doubles. Technically Hiawatha forfeited the first and second doubles because players were involved in the singles matches. Doubling up is not allowed.

This was my second time at HCPA this year and this time I was early and saw the entire match.

With this charting completed I am only missing out on two teams: Burnsville and Fridley.

FIRST SINGLES

CODY 2, ANAHI 0
(21-1, 21-11)

HCPA’s Cody smashed her way to a two set victory at first singles. Cody had 22 total smashes for the night, 13 coming in the first set. The pattern was serve, return, smash for the first three points of the match. Things kept rolling Cody’s way. Of her 22 smashes 13 came on the third stroke. The only point Anahi scored in the first half was a block of a smash on the fourth stroke. The first set lasted less than five minutes.

There was a change of strategy in the second where Cody attempted to use more and different shot combinations. The soft drive came into play more often, and rallies lasted a bit longer. The change also gave room for Anahi to play longer. Twice Anahi aced Cody in the second set. Match point proved to be hard to secure with Anahi getting her second run of three with Cody serving at 20-8. One bright spot for Hiawatha was after Cody earned point 16 Anahi outscored her HCPA opponent 6-5.

For the second straight match the scores were in sync—the start of a streak.
