Badminton Out & About: Como Park v North St. Paul 5.3.2024

COMO PARK 6, NORTH ST. PAUL 1

Como Park hosted the Polars of North St. Paul and put them on ice. This was the Cougars seventh win in a row. During the year, CP has topped both co-city champions Johnson and Washington. Today NSP was able to get the win at first doubles to stop the sweep. There were a few tight sets with the prime example at first singles in the first set (more on that later). By the same token CP held their guests to single digits in sets three times in singles, and twice in doubles.

I have been taping/filming/recording (whatever is the proper term) first doubles recently. Today I did that too. But there was a twist. With Como’s gym extremely tight for space I went up the bleachers to set up shop. I was able to get both first doubles and …first singles. When you see the singles information below it will be the standard information you see in all the O&A. At some point this weekend I expect to get the doubles done for this match and the Edina /Washington match on Thursday. And then I will examine the first singles for more details. My hand can not write that fast in “real” time. I need more “reel” time.

Xee LEE 2, Isabelle YANG 0 (21-19, 21-14)

The Cougars Xee Lee picked up win number eleven this season with a come from behind victory in both sets over NSP’s Isabelle Yang. Lee held a five point lead in the first set (8-3) only to see it evaporate on Yang’s fourth service where she got her only run of the set, and it was a doozy with seven straight. That put the Polar in front 10-8. Lee got her third run in the opening set on her sixth service and the five points added put her in front to stay. At that point Lee’s side out game was stifling getting four straight side outs. But Yang’s side out game was just as effective with an identical four straight. An ace by Yang broke the sideoutfest. Then back to two side outs. The set ended when Lee lofted a bird to the left back corner, her fifth clear of the set, for the final point.

Yang opened set two with the first four points. That would be her final run of the day and she would only be able to squeeze two more points off serve the rest of the set. Lee did not move in front until her sixth service where she got the first of her two runs and turned a 10-6 deficit into an 11-10 lead. A Yang side out tied it but a missed serve deep gave Lee a chance to tack on four more points and a 16-11 advantage. The last two came on clears.

For the match Lee led in winners (24-13) with both clears and smashes carrying the same weight of nine. Lee also led in errors 20-18. Both players lost a little of their winner mojo in the second set. Yang’s error totals mushroomed from five to an unlucky 13.
