Badminton State Wednesday Results: Edina Wins Second Straight Title

The Edina Hornets survived a nailbiter in the semis, and then took the brooms to St. Paul Johnson in winning their second straight team title. The #1 seed Hornets trailed Highland Park 3-2 in the semis needing both matches still in play for the victory. Third doubles fell their way with a prolonged 25-23 third set win by Ella Burke & Daisy Henningon. And with a touch of déjà vu Claire Watz prevailed over Nica Johnson at fourth singles 21-18 in the final set to clinch the title. Last year Watz was cast in the same roll needing to secure the fourth win in the semifinals over Johnson and again in the championship with Burnsville.

After collectively wiping their brow, Edina then shut out the #2 Governors. This was only the fourth sweep since the tournament started in 1996. The last sweep came in 2017 with Johnson in the driver’s seat. One match went the distance—-the battle between #1 doubles Ivy Petersen and Sanna Coma of Edina against #2 Dao Sangwang and Goldy Moua. That could very well be a preview of the championship tomorrow. Both will have to survive four contests before that battle.

Edina finished the season 17-0. With the three wins

numbers and the analysis of first singles with #1 seed Phlower Vang and #3 seed Tenzin Tsephel plus the doubles contest between Edina and Johnson will get posted tomorrow.
