ABOUT LAST NIGHT….

I charted six games. It took its toll. The recaps I usually do will be one liners. After that a closer examination of the “Clutch” or “Crunch” time performers and teams (which will include one game from Friday). Themes of the day were comebacks that came up short for ranked teams (WHA, Wayzata, Maple Grove) with one that did not for an unranked team (Mayo). Upsets were also a theme with five lower or unranked teams proving victorious (probably four considering #2AA Crosby-Ironton is a class above #1A Goodhue). Three #1s were charted with Marshall missing out on the fun.

GAMES:

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 57, #2A Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 54. The unranked Jaguars knocked off the unbeaten Wolfpack. A key part of that was BBE’s 30 offensive boards outrebounding WHA total 51-31. WHA had to keep chipping away. Clutch time was not reached until there was 1:10 left—the threshold being within five points under four minutes to go. WHA’s biggest deficit came at 52-42. BBE had a 12-2 run after breaking free from a 40 all tie. This was the only game away from St. Benedict with St. Cloud Tech the host. BBE’s Adley Hagen led the way with 19 points.

#7AAAA Prior Lake 67, #5AAAA Wayzata 62. The Lakers built up a substantial 22-6 lead only to see Wayzata fight back. “Clutch” time did not kick in until 3:45 remained in the game. That came after a five point possession for the Trojans. Elli Howard made a 3 when Maren Day was fouled on a screen set. She converted both initiating the five-point situation. Wayzata was able to get to three points twice in the next four minutes, but their defense could not get the key stops. Rebounds were key in the first game, but Wayzata led in that category 38-26. Both teams struggled at the line with Wayzata only going 11/22 (50%) to PL’s 15/25 (60%). Day was the games leading scorer with 19.

#2 Crosby-Ironton 81, #1A Goodhue 63. The Rangers won a physical battle with the Wildcats. Goodhue “won” the foul battle 24-16, which meant CI toed the line 32 times to 19 for Goodhue. Future Gopher Tori Oehrlein got her number (30) to lead the scoring with teammate Regan Juenemann close behind with 26.

Rochester Mayo 68, #4 Minnetonka 66. This was tight throughout with the defending AAAA Skippers up at half 32-30. The only exception to this was early on where Minnetonka led 23-11. After that it was a dog fight. The Clutch time kicked in at the top at four minutes with the Skippers in front 59-54. Mayo went in front momentarily at 60-59 on Amelia Mills steal & layup. Minnetonka’s regained the lead after a Jazmin Daing 3 62-60 with slightly under three minutes remaining and then added two inside by Lesedra Williams for a 64-60 advantage. Mayo scored on their last four possessions. The game winning free throws were converted with 8.9 seconds left by Maggie Dyer. Both Dyer (24 points) and Mills (21 points) are Freshmen for the Spartans. Minnetonka did get off a shot but it was off. Williams matched Dyer with 24 points for the Skippers. Again Minnetonka won the board battle at 47-33, but lost the war. Minnetonka also won the turnover battle 20-15. The key difference was at the free throw line with Mayo going 22/28 at the line. Dyer alone made 12, which was one more than the entire Minnetonka team (11).

#1 Providence 91, #8 Duluth Marshall 70. Usually when I chart Providence it gets to be running time. Not today. But the same themes rang true. Balance. Execution. Pressure. The Lions roared. Duluth Marshall was down 24-9 around the nine minute mark. Turnovers were a big winner for the Lions at 27-9. That led to 19 more field goal attempts. They also went to the line six more times. Chloe Johnson, the freshman sharpshooter for DM, rang up 42 points, going 7/12 from deep. I mean deep. Like 4 point or even 5 point range. All five starters for Providence were in double digits with Greenway leading the way with 22……no not Maddyn who fouled out with 18, eighth grade sister Beckett (or is it Bucket) led the list for Providence.

#3 Hopkins 59, #1 Maple Grove 55. The Royals are a MASH unit. First Tatum Woodson is done with a knee. Also Ava Caputo was dressed in street clothes on the bench. Then Erma Walker left the contest in the first half with a right ankle injury and did not return. The Royals led 13-9 at the time. The response? A victory over the #1 Crimson. At halftime Hopkins was up 31-22 holding MG to only eight field goals, only one a 3. The Hopkins advantage melted away in the second half and MG tied it up at 48 after a Jordan Ode 3. The first and only lead for MG came on a rebound basket by Kate Holmquist. That was the start of crunch time. The Royal defense held down the stretch while outscoring MG 9-5.

31 CLUB

  1. Tori Oehrlein, Crosby-Ironton 56
  2. Chloe Johnson, Duluth Marshall 49
  3. Beckett Greenway, Providence 40
  4. Hope Counts, Providence 39
  5. Maggie Dyer, Rochester Mayo 37

  7. Regan Juenemann, Crosby-Ironton 36
  8. Ari Peterson, Minnetonka 34

  11. Kendyl Lodermeier, Goodhue 32
  12. Emma Millerbernd, Providence 32
  13. Kacey Fisher, BBE 31
  14. Adley Hagen, BBE 31

14 members. Providence had four with Mckenna Schaefer close behind at 28. There were two each for CI, BBE, and Minnetonka. Four of the 14 did not win their games.

What is the 31 Club???? Add points + D Stops (D Rebounds, steals, forced turnovers, Blocks leading to possession) + distributions. Like a triple double.

Take away points and the remainder is what I call value added. Here is an examination of the top five:

  1. Oehrlein 30-15-11—-value added 26 (plus a true triple double)
  2. Johnson 42-6-1—–value added 7
  3. B Greenway 22-10-8—-value added 18
  4. Counts 11-21-7—-value added 28
  5. Dyer 24-10-3—-value added 13

With this Hope Counts and Oehrlein are both over 20. I want to also mention distribution numbers. I have the percentage of set up passes that score. Here Oehrlein shines too with 11/15 or .733.

CLUTCH/CRUNCH TIME

Here is a listing of the teams that were in clutch/crunch time and how their pp100s measured up. I am including the Friday game at Hastings between Farmington & New Prague. After that a listing of the players. That might be eye opening for some. First the teams pp100.

School, points/possessions, pp100

  1. Rochester Mayo 14/8 175.0
  2. New Prague 13/9 144.4
  3. Farmington 12/9 133.3
  4. Hopkins 11/9 122.2
  5. Wayzata 10/10 100.0
  6. Minnetonka 7/8 87.5
  7. Prior Lake 7/9 77.8
  8. Maple Grove 6/9, 66.7
  9. WHA ½ , 50.0
  10. BBE 1/3, 33.3

The top three all live in section 1AAAA. Of the centurians two lost.

INDIVIDUALS- POINTS, PP100 (only top

  1. Taylor Hemann, New Prague 9 points, 180 pp100
  2. Gianna Carpentier, Farmington 7 points, 175 pp100
  3. Amelia Mills, Rochester Mayo 6 points, 150 pp100
  4. Maggie Dyer, Rochester Mayo 5 points 166.7 pp100
  5. Ava Smith, Hopkins 4 points, 200.0 pp100
  6. Bree Bowman, Prior Lake 4 points, 133.3 pp100
  7. Annika Kieser Wayzata 4 points, 200.0 pp100
  8. Allie Berns, Wayzata 4 points, 133.3 pp100

Again the top four are all 1AAAA types. We might have to rename that section Clutch Section.

What about the 31 Clubbers (that were eligible)

  1. Lauren Hillesheim, Hopkins 2 points, 200.0 pp100
  2. Lesedra Williams, Minnetonka 2 points, 200.0 pp100
  3. Ari Peterson, Minnetonka 2 points, 66.7 pp100
  4. Adley Hagen, BBE 0 points, 0.0 pp100
  5. Kacey Fischer, BBE no possessions

I am not going to highlight players that were used three times or more that either had a zero, or were under 50. They are not clutch.

Woe unto those that win big and never get a chance to be clutch…..actually the best teams win early and never are in end of the game theatrics (from all my years of observing games). The get the job done fast and efficiently and are clapping for teammates in the last four minutes of the game because it is over.

UNBEATEN

Two 2AA teams dropped—JWP & MVL both were unranked. Two ranked A teams (WHA & Underwood) were among the three that lost. Both were in the state tournament last season. That leaves a dozen overall with AA leading the way with seven. Four of those AA teams are in the top 10.

AAAA-0

None.

THE WEEK AHEAD

We ring in the new year with games every day except January 1. The tournament season is not quite over yet with Aitkin and Winona State holding events on Monday and Tuesday (at least at Aitkin). The busiest day of the week will be Friday with at least 105 now scheduled. Saturday brings events back to the front with The Southern MN Hoops Fest held at Byron, Goodhue, Rochester JM, Kasson-Mantorville. These are boys/girls type events. If you look to the North, then Duluth East has the Lake Superior Classic. Both are put on by the Breakdown. If you want to cross state lines then Madison, SD is your spot.
