MN GBB: Wednesday 1.29.2025 action; High Five; 3 Paraders; Ranked Results, A Schedules; and the Day Ahead

Reports from Wednesday 1.29.2025 action.

D1 HIGH FIVE

Olivia Olson, Michigan, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 30

Lauren Jensen, Creighton, Lakeville North 22

Molly Mogensen, Creighton, Farmington 22

Jocelyn Land, Butler, Holy Family 14

Abby Schulte, North Dakota State, Maple Grove 14

Totals: 102

Four of the five are AAAA grads. Four of the five played in the state tournament (Land the exception on both counts). Land & Olson are the most recent HS grads at 2024.

These five topped the D2 102-71….but, to be fair, the D1 slate of games had more contests. The D2 listing below had two and was exclusively Northern Sun based. There could have been more D2 action, but I did not track any other MN players involved.

D2 HIGH FIVE

Emma Miller, UM Crookston, St. Michael-Albertville 25

Maria Counts, UM Duluth, Providence 15

Vivica Bretton, Winona State, Rochester Lourdes 14

Lexi Karge, UM Duluth, Mankato East 11

Grace Counts, UM Duluth, Providence 6

TOTALS: 71

The Counts sisters won titles in HS. Miller got to the finals her senior year with STMA. Bretton was part of the Lourdes squad that was a finalist due to the virus outbreak in 2020.

Compared to D1 the class breakdown skews smaller with one AAAA; one AAA and three AA.

A OPPONENT ACTION

How do the A teams stack up when it comes to opponents

School AAAA AAA AA A Other
Goodhue 0 5 12 2 0
Hillcrest Lutheran 0 0 0 17 0
Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 0 0 2 16 0
Mountain Iron-Buhl 0 1 5 12 0
Mayer Lutheran 0 3 6 8 0
Kittson County Central 0 0 5 12 0
Central MN Christian 0 0 3 16 0
Breckenridge 0 0 9 8 1
Hancock 0 0 1 17 0
Braham 0 1 8 7 1
Totals 0 10 51 115 2

Clearly Goodhue faces the toughest schedule in the AAA/AA based Hiawatha Valley League. Mayer Lutheran, Breckenridge and Braham are the next three up with Breckenridge based in the AA Heart O’Lakes Conference and Braham in a tweener AA/A conference—the Great River. Mayer Lutheran, closer to the metro, schedules bigger schools for their non-conference slate. Mountain Iron-Buhl would be up next with six bigger opponents so far. KCC sees a couple of AA teams twice. Hillcrest Lutheran has only had a steady diet of A opponents. SESM, CMC, Hancock all have close to 90% of their opponents in Class A. That contrasts with Goodhue with about 10%.

DAY AHEAD

There are an even 100 scheduled for Thursday.
