ABOUT LAST NIGHT….Mountain Iron-Buhl v Mayer Lutheran

Actually about last afternoon…..#3A Mountain Iron-Buhl travel over 4 hours down to #2A Mayer Lutheran  and put the rest of the A field on notice that the Rangers will be a danger to opponents provided each team can get to state, in a convincing 83-58 victory over the Crusaders. MIB turned the tables on ML from last year’s loss at home. Balance, depth, and above all sharp execution highlighted by 14 3s broke the hosts.

MIB started the day up 11-6 but an 8-0 Crusader run prompted a Ranger time out with 10:23 left in the half. ML’s last three point lead came at 7:19 at 22-19. The game was still tight with MIB up slightly at 25-24 when ML took a timeout after scoring a put back at 4:13. From that point on the Rangers had a 12-1 finish to the half capped by a 3 at the buzzer by 8th grade reserve Farrah Thomas providing a healthy 37-25 margin for the guests. MIB led by a dozen despite leading scorer Anna Neyens being held scoreless and not getting to the free throw line once while ML cashed in there 10/13. Also, sophomore post Paige Norman spent more time on the bench with three fouls. MIB overcame both problems. Just looking at starters ML was up 25-24. The bench provided a lift for the Rangers with 13 points and a 108.3 pp100. The starters weren’t far behind with a 92.3. ML relied almost entirely on their starters and had a 71.4 pp100. The key difference was shooting percentage. MIB was scorching the nets from 2s at 11/16 (68%) to only 33% for ML (6/18). The Rangers’ long distance aim was strong with 5/14 (36%) compared to 13% for ML. MIB also was winning the battle of the boards 19-15. MIB’s offensive rebound mark (they weren’t missing that much) was 35.7%. ML was at 30%.

As it turned out MIB also started the second half with the ball and another 3, this time by junior Aniyah Thomas set the tone. ML had one last stretch where they closed the gap to 40-33 with another 8-0 run, but MIB’s flame throwers torched the nets from long distance and Anna Neyens got on track. She ended up leading MIB with 17 points. She was one of five Rangers in double figures with one just missing out with 9 points. The 3s came raining down thanks to court awareness, spacing and crisp ball movement. That led to a 9/15 second half mark, or an insanely high 60% from long distance. And the wealth was spread around. Six Rangers converted long distance. With 12:34 left in the game MIB already had enough in the bank for victory up 55-35. At the widest MIB led 78-46. A 12-5 ML finish with some deeper MIB bench in the game helped tighten the score.

The Crusaders had the only player that made the 31 Club with junior guard Clara Keaveny getting a game high 22 points. She also was the only Crusader over 100 pp100 with 122.2. Twin sister Izabelle was the next closest 31 Clubber at 28. MIB’s best score was Neyens with 27, 26 of those in the second half alone. Neyens topped everyone with a 188.9 pp100. Five others joined her with 100 or better pp100.

One interesting head scratching stat was ML was sharper at three touches or less on offense with a 13/26 or 50% conversion rate. MIB was only 12/35 or 34.3%. MIB was better at longer possessions (seven or more touches) at 8/14 (57.1%) to 7/22 (31.8%). A second head scratcher—-MIB only attempted one free throw all night (they converted). ML walloped them in that category with 28 attempts and 23 made. It all boiled down to shooting proving the old adage “You shoot good, you look good.” And to quote Fernando (an old SNL character) MIB shot “mahvelous.” For the game 20/30 from 2s (66.7%) and 14/29 (48%).

UNBEATEN

No changes in the list. The possibility still exists that we could have two undefeated champs. Royalton has not been seeded yet. The other three are all #1 seeds in their respective sections.

QUEST FOR..

THE QRF

Really no changes on this list. The only flip is Proctor moves to the biggest fish left replacing Fergus Falls. Most of the week the top 40 (Casey Kasem) was completed.

1-10 10/10-1.000

1-20 20/20-1.000

1-30 30/30-1.000

1-40 39/40-.975

1-50 46/50-.920

Biggest fish left to fry…. Now is #39 Proctor

TOP 10s

Mountain Iron-Buhl keeps A at five spots. No change overall.

AAAA 10/10-1.000

AAA 10/10-1.000

AA 7/10-.700

A 5/10-.500

overall it is 32/40 or .800.

#1s EACH SECTION

The addition of Mountain Iron-Buhl is the only movement (or subtraction off the list).

AAAA 8/8—1.000

AAA 7/8-.875 just missing Rock Ridge from section 7.

AA 5/9-.556 (section 3AA is split) missing JWP in section 2; Jackson County Central section 3 south;  Sauk Centre section 6; DGF section 8

A 6/12-.500 (splits in 3, 5, 6, 8) missing 3N, 3S, 6N, 6S, 8E, 8W

Overall, 26/37 or .703

SEEDING THE STATE

I moved Hopkins back into the top spot in 6AAAA. Why? Three on a match is tough. It will be even tougher without injured players for Wayzata. In A Kelliher/Northome, by virtue of their victory on Friday over Kittson County Central, is now takes the 8A space.

How solid are the #1s listed? With MG surviving Blaine, the #4 seed in lowest rated AAAA section 7, things will be fluid. The top four listed teams in AAAA might have a pathway to a state title. The same truth holds for AAA (with the #2 from 6AAA a team to reckon with). AA with Providence look to cap a season where they have wins over current listed 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 (only missing EP) in AAAA and 2, 4, 7; AA 4×2; Goodhue, by virtue of their AAA/AA heavy schedule, and their state experience are the team to beat in A.

So the bigger classes should have the most drama and mystery as the March to March continues.
