D1 HIGH FIVE

Savannah White, Indiana State, DeLaSalle 24

Avery Koenen, North Dakota State, Montevideo 20

Abby Krzewinski, North Dakota State, Wayzata 18

Alayna Contreras, Kansas City, Hopkins 16

Paige Bueckers, UConn, Hopkins 15

Totals: 93

There was no D2 action in the Northern Sun. The five players here have a heavy Lake vibe with 49 total points. Hopkins produced 31. Three classes get the spotlight with AAA DLS and AA Montevideo getting top nods. Also the Summit League came up with 54 of the total for the day.

POINT PARADE

Parade starts at 25. If a player is missing email kja8067@gmail.com.

Only two?????? Two things going on here. 1. defenses are better as the sections roll on so scoring sprees are limited to 24 points or under for a vast majority of players…..but……scores are NOT being reported and posted more often than not. Get this done.

A strange day where A wins the production battle 2.88 ahead of AA. AAA trailed all and did not get average over 50.

AA will not have all #1 seeds in the tournament. That was guaranteed on Thursday when both #2s (Minnewaska in the North; Fairmont in the south) advanced to the 3AA title game. What was strange was the margin in the Fairmont victory over #1 Jackson County Central—-near running time territory at 32 points. Waska won by six in a low scoring affair. The other three classes are safe for all #1s..but it is rare if all eight tournament teams are #1s.

As far as “will all teams be ranked in the polls” meaning the last poll. AAAA no—missing 4, 7. AAA no—-missing 3; AA no—missing 2, 8. A no—missing 3. Those are the ones guaranteed to be missing. More could fall in the coming days.

The biggest upset of the night—or at least the lowest seeded team to defeat a higher seed—was #12 Osakis in 6AA leaving #5 Legacy in the dust 60-41. Also worthy of an eyebrow raised came in 5AAA with #6 Fridley kenneling the Becker Bulldogs by a dozen. There were a two 9s over 8s, two 5s over 4s, and a 7 over 10.

The ranked average was still an elevated 68.73 last night despite the low score with Minnewaska & NLS (42-36). Take those two scores out of the equation and the ranked average pops to 75.33.

Here is a truism: scores are going to decline; possessions are going to decline as the tournaments continue. You will not see many if any 79 point margins in the coming days. Surviving teams generally handle the ball better and are more skilled in shooting than teams turning in uniforms. That means teams that can execute with seven or more touches per play are going to be successful. 35 seconds is not forever. Most teams play defense for eight seconds. If a team can be patient and get the ball where they want with who they want they will move on.
