ABOUT LAST NIGHT….A quarters plus one AAAA semi

Another busy day again, this time with five and a half games. I did not chart the first AAAA semi, since I got there with the first half completed. With all the quarters finished I was able to see 31 of the 32 teams in the state field this year. NRHEG escaped my charting.

For the second time this tournament a #7 seed upended a #2. MACCRAY edged Mayer Lutheran 55-51 joining Cretin-Derham Hall in their win over Monticello in AAA. The Wolverines and Raiders also share the fact that they were the only non-ranked teams to advance to the semifinals in any class.

Here is the quick synopsis from Thursday

A PP100
Goodhue 105.6
Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 104.8

I find it odd that of the six 31 Clubbers (plus) only two were able to be centurions. This too me is concerning. Especially the AAAA level where the pair could not get to 70. Both were beneath their team’s pp100. Obviously, they are doing quite a bit to get to 31, but their effectiveness can be sooo much better. Decision making/turnovers is one example. When you are a point guard (both are) and turning it over every 10.88 or 10.14 touches that requires remediation.

In the olden days, when I named a player of the week, the requirements to be considered were clearing the bar on numbers, with a pp100 of 100 or better, and a floor % of .500 or better. In this case the only two under consideration would be Lawrence and Martin and both their teams lost yesterday. I need consistency. Even on the biggest stage with the brightest spotlights.

The three teams that were centurion level are in the finals (Hopkins) or are favored in the A Semis Friday.

DAY AHEAD

A & AA Semis. This will only be the second time in state history that there will be a match up of two top five scorers of all time (Mack, Minnehaha v Oehrlein, Crosby-Ironton).  The first came on January 24 with Mack & Greenway. (when both were top five—they met earlier but had not reached that status).
