Badminton Out & About: Kennedy v Burnsville 3.18.2025

KENNEDY 6, BURNSVILLE 1

The host Kennedy Eagles picked up their second win of the year with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Burnsville Blaze. This was Burnsville’s first contest of the young season. The Eagles swept the singles holding the Blaze to single digits in three of the eight sets; while squeaking by in the second and third doubles in three sets, and in both cases taking the final set in extra points. A flip of two points would have resulted still with a Kennedy victory, but a tighter 4-3 variety. The Burnsville returning first doubles pair of Katie Murray and Natalie Portwood prevented their opponents from reaching double digits. That advantage helped the Blaze win the point battle, if not the match battle at doubles.

FIRST SINGLES

Kateryna MYKHAILOVICH 2, Miaoting FANG 0
(22-17, 21-9)

This is another case of two now advancing to first singles after playing last year at a lower flight. Kateryna Mykhailovich spent more time at second singles in 2024, Miaoting Fang was Burnsville’s third until and injury moved her up a notch. Today a slow start by Mykhailovich kept picking up steam as the day rolled on in a two set win over Fang. A superior side out game where Mykhailovich shut down her Blaze opponent seven straight services late in the first set was a key to victory. Fang started the match with the first three points and maintained that advantage out to a 10-8 score. Mykhailovich then put together to straight four point runs to claim a 16-12 lead. The first run started with the longest rally of the day, a 13 stroke hitting error that sailed wide on an attempted clear. At some point in the first set the players lost track of the real score because I charted 22-17 at the close, which has the same margin as 21-16. Mykhailovich closed with six winners in her final eight points.

The second set did not provide the lead changes in the first. Mykhailovich’s first run of four had three clears in the mix for a 7-2 lead. Her next run of four, all on winners, gave her an 11-4 advantage. On the Eagle’s fourteenth point, a clear to the left back corner, Fang fell, with her right ankle the culprit. She continued to play on, but her mobility was not as explosive and a six point run by Mykhailovich to close the match can attest to that. Fang spent time after the match with ice on the outside of the right ankle. Mykhailovich had a big advantage in winners in the second set 14-4 with six clears topping the list.
