NORTH ST. PAUL 6, MATH & SCIENCE 1
Another day where there was only one match scheduled. Another day where I charted the team in the last match (North St. Paul). Spring break is keeping most teams sidelined. But a pair were in action today.
Friday North St. Paul traveled to Como Park and were swept by the Cougars. This time the Polars were home, and they took down Math & Science with the Dragons preventing the sweep with a win (in three sets) at first singles. More on that match below. The first sets had three two-point margins with NSP taking both at the even singles, and M&S taking the first doubles. As the match wore on the Polars gained stretched their margins (the exception was at first singles where M&S picked up steam).
NSP moves to 3-4 on the year. M&S is even now at 1-1.
First doubles will be added later to the story after I break the tape down.

FIRST SINGLES
EMILY B 2, MALLORY 1
(14-21, 21-13, 23-21)
Emily B bounced back from a first set loss to gain the Dragons’ only victory of the day. She not only bounced back from a first set loss, but she rallied from a seven point deficit in the third set. NSP’s Mallory Heaser was stepping up from second singles replacing Isabelle Yang. Both players were evenly matched, with Emily B excelling in sideouts, but Heaser scoring more points overall. Rallies, which have been short and sweet most of the season, showcased loooonger variety with seven going to double digits. Of those points going eight strokes or more Heaser came out on top 9-8. Heaser also prevailed in winners 36-32.
Heaser took the first set thanks to a massive 17-point run on her second service. Ten of those points came on winners with four soft drives leading the way. A 13-stroke clear was the longest point in that first set. Emily B held off set point with a five-point run before the inevitable. But I had the set over at 21-7. Another day of miscounting scores.
Emily B used a six-point run on her fourth service to establish a 9-4 lead. Heaser had two runs to close the gap to 15-13. A missed serve opened a three-point run for Heaser and Emily B closed the set with another run of three to even the series at one set each. Emily secured more winners in that set 14-9 with her power game providing five smashes.
Early in the third set Heaser had two runs of three and six building out to an 11-4 lead. The two switched courts and the momentum stayed on that side of the court. After the turn Emily B outpointed Heaser 19-10. Emily B had a run of four and then three to cut the deficit to 13-12. Heaser had one last run to stretch her advantage to 17-12. A six-point run gave Emily B her first lead at 18-17. A two-point push by Heaser made it 19-18 in favor of NSP. Emily B had match point at 20-19 after a four stroke clear followed by a five-stroke smash. Heaser responded with her own four stroke smash to tie it up. We were headed to extra points. Both players traded three stroke hitting errors. Emily had her second match point after a seven-stroke hitting error that landed in the net. She concluded the marathon match with a five-stroke smash.

FIRST DOUBLES
JOLENA / CLAIRE 2, SANJANA T / SATHRIKA T 1
(reported 21-23, 21-14, 21-10, recorded 21-25, 21-14, 21-10)
For the second time this year I recorded a first doubles contest. And for the second time this year Jolena & Claire were involved. Last Friday they lost in three to Como Park. On Monday they were victorious in three over Math & Science’s identical twins Sanjana & Sathrika. The Dragon pair rallied to take the first set overcoming a five point deficit. The twins got back in the contest by holding Jolena & Claire scoreless on eleven straight services. The last time the Polars scored on serve came on their third service as they7 led 9-6. Early on Claire scored six straight times in building the early lead. Of the four Dragon runs two came in the first set. If you notice above I have reported/ recorded results. In reality Math & Science should have closed up shop at 21-17. I don’t know how they got off count, but apparently they got way off count. Another weird thing in the first set and in the whole match was the serving order. Sathrika served consecutive rotations twice. And that was followed by Sanjana for three straight rotations. Claire also went twice in a row. As the match went on NSP kept to the right sequence. Again in the second set Sathrika served three rotations. Both twins went twice in the final set.
Getting back to the match…
The Polars took control of the second set, this time with Jolena pushing the lead forward with four straight (10-3). It was an uphill climb for M&S after that. The Dragons did hold off set point three times before a soft drive by Claire finished the set.
In set three NSP came up with three of their seven runs. When Jolena delivered four right after the switch at eleven and then Claire on NSP’s next service combined to make it an 8-1 run.
With the ability to stop, rewind, review and getting the details right a couple of items stood out today: #1 Jolena’s side out percentage was almost double the other three at .826. The next best was Sathrika’s at .484. #2 Jolena also did the best on points scored off serve with 18 or .286. The other three were in the lower .200s. #3 Claire took the most strokes with 160 and had more winners with 26. Combined M&S only had 21. The smash proved to be the winner of choice for three of the players with Jolena at 9, Claire 8, and Sathrika 7. The difference was Claire was also able to use clears for 7 and drives and soft drives for five each. The next highest winner was four for the other three. #4 set up points are when a player has a hitting error. The set up is recorded right before that error. Sathrika was the leader there with 14. #5 long rallies tipped to NSP 28-19. The Polars did even better with two points or less at 10-2.
There will be more first doubles to come. More insights await.
