FIRST SINGLES

Hazel DANG 2, Gaozhia VUE 1 (reported 21-16, 16-21, 21-13 recorded 21-15, 17-21, 21-13)

#2 Hazel Dang defeated #4 Gaozhia Vue in three sets. This was the pair’s second meeting this year. Dang defeated Vue in the Edina Invitational also in three sets but needed extra points in the third set then 25-23. Today’s final set was not that tight. What this match had was an odd twist—each player was shut out on runs when they lost. Neither player had mega-runs or an avalanche of points. Side out play ruled. The second set in particular involved 14 services for Dang, one of the most charted this year for a single set. Dang did prevail with 13 more winners in the match than Vue. Dang also cleaned up her service game. Last week against Johnson she had eleven service errors. Today Dang was perfect at the service line. As a result, Dang had nine more points off service today, one less than the margin difference.

In set one Dang used the first run of the set on her third service to go up 6-4. Her second run came two services later to build out to an 11-7 lead. Dang’s third run put her on the verge at 20-13, but it took three chances to close the set out. Dang overwhelmed Vue on winners in this set 16-8 including three blocks.

Vue broke the runless streak right out of the gate with the first three points in set two and she never relinquished that lead. Vue only had two runs for the match and her final tally came on her eighth service (14-8). Vue almost doubled her winner totals in the second set to a 15-11 advantage. The smash was winner of choice with eight. Of the six two stroke winners she had in the set, four were winners.

A tight beginning to the final set broke to Dang on her fourth service where she had a run of five starting with a two-stroke drive to the right on the side out. Once again Dang racked up 15 winners and her defense only permitted six. For Dang the soft drive would prove to be beneficial with five tallies. For the match Dang had two double digit favorites in winners with the soft drive 13 and drops going for ten. Smashes just missed out with nine. Vue’s best winner was the smash, good for 13 points.

Dang is now 10-3 on the season. Vue falls to 9-5.
