Last week the St. Paul conference race became even more scrambled indicating how balanced the competition this year is in the Capitol City. The Minneapolis race has been decided. Roosevelt will advance to the Twin Cities championship. In St. Paul, Como Park will likely host the Teddies. Two matches remain on the schedule, but the Cougars have two 6-1 wins over second place Harding. Como’s opponents this week include Johnson on Tuesday and Washington on Thursday. Harding and Johnson will battle on Thursday.
Other big individual matchups for the week include a rematch with #3 Hazel Dang of Edina vs. #1 Kateryna Mykhailovich of Kennedy on Wednesday at Kennedy. Other top five singles battles include #2 Su Meh of Johnson looking to avenge an earlier loss to #5 Niko Solheid of Como Park. Edina will also host Highland Park on Thursday. That will have the #1 v #4 doubles squads facing each other.
Two weeks remain in the regular season. Next week the City Conference Tournaments will be center stage along with the Twin Cities championship. Then the team and individual state tournaments take over.
Three schools remain uncharted. That should end this week. I am now at 90% of the thirty schools. Minneapolis and the Suburban schools join St. Paul in complete charting. Next up the Charter/Privates.
COACHES:
The state tournament rosters are due on Thursday, May 8. Right now, one school has submitted the information.
The last official team poll will be on Wednesday, May 7. On that date the matchups for the team portion of the state tournament will be released with opponents and sites. First round will be Monday, May 12.

INDIVIDUALS
Kateryna Mykhailovich of Kennedy moves into the top spot of the singles rankings. Su Meh of Johnson lost for the second time this season, this time to Highland Park’s Nica Johnson. Mykhailovich remains undefeated. Also undefeated? Morgan Aufdenkamp also of Kennedy. She was in the first singles position for the Eagles when she injured her ankle. No word on her return. Tsuki Solheid, Como Park’s second singles, was unbeaten heading into last week. Aarushi Bhatnagar of Edina stopped that streak.
I have added 2 behind the players that are second singles (or doubles) for their respective schools. The highest #2 in singles is Ganou Vang of Johnson in the #9 spot and in doubles Juman Alkhatib / Bergen Pickett of Edina moves to #6.
Margin calls: Ivy Peterson and Sanna Coma of Edina continue to be the gold standard at 12.19 points per set. Last week, for the fourth time this year, they beat #2 Katie Murray and Natalie Portwood of Burnsville. The margins in the latest contest was 10.00. Earlier in the week the Hornet pair topped #5 Asta Ket & Gaolee Yang of Como Park with a margin of 13.00. IP & SC have not lost a set all year. The highest point total allowed this year by the Edina pair is 18 points once. The next highest is 15. 13 times they have held opponents to single digits.
In singles #1 Kateryna Mykhailovich of Kennedy leads the margin call here with 10.67 points per set. Looking at just time spent at the #1 singles position the margins drop to a still robust 9.50. Twelve times she has held opponents to single digits. The only set she lost was 21-19 in the first set to North St. Paul’s Mallory Heaser. Su Meh of Johnson has a margin of 6.48. She has played in four three set matches.
I can state right now that the singles quarterfinals (and then moving forward) should be extremely juicy. Even the Sweet 16 round could hold a surprise or two.
