ABOUT LAST NIGHT…..MINNEHAHA V PARK CENTER
I attended this game for two reasons… to see Minnehaha, a perennial AA state tournament power from section 4, and Park Center, a team that was #7 on the QRF list that morning. A third reason might be it was close by. My dog, if it went to public school, would be a Pirate.
The Pirates are not in the QRF top ten anymore. Now they are #20, a drop of 13 spots, and still that is higher than AAAA teams that are ranked in the coaches’ poll like Wayzata (#5 to #25 QRF, & Lakeville North (#10 to #56 QRF). My guess is that eventually both the Trojans and Panthers will surpass the slippery handed Pirates.
Minnehaha put the clamps on Park Center severely. MA forced a whopping 34 Pirate turnovers. PC was not ready right from the start as balls slipped through hands, advertised and stared down their passes, which were all above the head and soft to the perimeter, passing to ghosts showcasing miscommunication, and had issues on blocking out with a Redhawk possession that featured an astronomical five shot attempts. MA used both a full court press but had plenty of success with doubling the ball immediately when it crossed the ten second line forcing whoever had the ball, usually Lyric Singleton, into an errant pass. For the game PC coughed it up every 9.56 touches. Not what one would expect from a top 10 QRF type team.
As far as the string theory went—MA had their first sequence starting on possession 12-13-14. That 7-0 advantage stretched their lead to 16-3 and forced a second PC time out, one minute after their first. It helped somewhat with the Pirates closing to 20-12 at the 7:40 mark of the first half. They would not score again before the break while MA added nine more including another string of three and again a 7-0 burst. Just those two strings gave MA a 29-12 lead at the break. Without those it would be a battle at 15-12. Neither team was smoking hot to begin with MA scoring at a 76.3 pp100 clip which was vastly better than the frigid 32.4 for the Pirates. PC was coughing the ball up at 11.73 touches in the first half.
MA had the only string in the second half beginning at the 5:36 mark when they rattled off four straight times, twice initiated on steals, once on a forced dead ball turnover to add and pad their lead to 51-25. That all happened in the space of 1:20. Coleman, who led all scorers with 18 points had four in that run. MA wasn’t finished on their strings with one more of three starting at the 3:26 mark. That pushed the margin to 58-27, close enough to smell running time, but never achieving it. PC never had a string of three.
The RedHawks took a hit in the first game of the year when Sinae Hill went down with a season ending ACL injury suffered in the last minute of their game with East Ridge. Then on the first play of the second half Shea Watkins landed wrong on her left knee and did not return. It seems that ACLs are the theme of the week either in the NFL with Mahomes and Parsons, or in HS GBB. This cramps MA’s depth, but I expect the Redhawks to return to state nevertheless. Others will need to step up and this adversity now will only help increase their depth, if not this year, in the years to follow. They did not start a senior. They did start Shea Watkins, an eighth grader (her twin Georgia came off the bench), a junior, two sophs and a freshman.

The RedHawks had two players join the 31 Club: Junior Gigi Coleman, their main point guard, had a 34, while sophomore Briana Foster had a 32, with 16 coming on the defensive end. Singleton was the single player from PC to join the club and she had a game best 35 to enter into that club. But with her pp100 of only 50 there is quite a bit of room for improvement as that is nowhere near the 100 to be golden. Foster was golden for MA with a 109.1. Coleman was close to the MA average with 78.3, again not golden.
Last year PC finished second to Maple Grove in section 5AAAA. They will be hard pressed to achieve that feat again.
FREE THROW UPDATE
Last week the free-throw percentage came in at 63.64%, better than the 61.93% for the first three weeks of the year. That means the season total is now up to 62.19%. Perhaps the early season results were a case of shaking off the rust. Still, this season total trails 2015 who came in at 63.55%. Last week’s total beat that 2015 mark, but it was only three contests. Will the improved free throw shooting continue? Stay tuned…..
