WEEK THAT WAS

UNBEATEN

Menahga is alone and won their matches this week.

Total undefeated left: 1

AAAA: 0

AAA: 0

AA: 1 Menahga

A: 0

Once Menahga falls I will list the one loss teams.

What about the flip side of this? The winless? Eleven are still looking for victory number one. Some will have to wait for 2026-27 as their seasons are over. The smaller schools have opted out of the sections.

Madelia escaped this list with a running time 69-21 win over MN Deaf.

AAAA: 0

AAA: 2 North Branch; Sauk Rapids-Rice

AA: 1 Albert Lea

A: 8 Browerville-Eagle Valley; Ortonville; Bigfork; and smaller charter/privates Lincoln International; MN Transitions; St. John’s Prep; Fond du Lac Ojibwe, and Community School of Excellence

STREAKING

Another week, another change for A. NRHEG made the list last week, but Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s snapped the Panthers win streak at 24. That opened the door for Kelliher/Northome who is the only school under 20 wins with 18.

AAAA: 23 Rochester Mayo

AAA: 24 Stewartville

AA: 26 Menahga

A: 18 Kelliher/Northome

Can these four be state champs? Best bet? Stewartville, but I would not bet the house.

PROLIFIC OFFENSE

a list of high scoring offenses (and below that stingy defenses)

What was interesting about last week was three of the leaders increased their average. Yes it was small but up is up.

AAAA 82.3 Rochester Mayo down 0.6

AAA 85.9 Hill-Murray up 0.1

AA 94.3 Providence up 0.3

A: 87.2 Kelliher/Northome up 0.2

The best chance for state titles? Providence easily. Next best chance? Kelliher/Northome, the newest streaking addition.

AIR TIGHT DEFENSE

Mayo rejoins the list, but they share that low spot with Owatonna. The other change came in A with Metro School College Prep taking over for International School/Chesterton

AAAA 43.5 Owatonna & Rochester Mayo up 0.9

AAA 39.0 Northfield down 0.6

AA 33.8 High School Recording Arts up 1.6

A  Metro School College Prep 27.7 down 0.2.

QUEST FOR…

QRF

I only saw one game during the week with the epic #1 v #2 on Tuesday at Wayzata won by soon to be #1 Hopkins. My car is still in the shop. They can’t find the problem. I was planning to see Minneapolis North….but they stumbled against Minneapolis Camden on Wednesday which kept them out of the Twin City Game on Saturday. As a result, I went backwards, especially south of #75.

Biggest fish not seen? Still Minneapolis North at #40 . Why are they ranked above DeLaSalle, Proctor, Duluth Marshall, and Crosby-Ironton? The formula needs to be severely tweaked.

Lost ground in AA with 2AA. But that may be due to not tracking it right last week.

THE WEEK THAT WILL BE…

Sections started last week. The action took place in AA & A for sections 1 & 3. The rest of the state will catch up this week with many finals to be set up (at least in the bigger classes) by Saturday. Most of the initial games this last week were designed to get down to a final eight. The upsets (a few) were of the 9 over 8 or 5 over 4 variety. Tuesday the first AAAA and AAA teams start their quarters. Wednesday the rest join. Saturday is a huge day with almost every section in action.

Also….not every #1 section seed makes the state. Last year the state champs were

AAAA: Hopkins (#2 seed in 6AAAA); AAA: Benilde-St. Margaret’s (#2 seed in 6AAA); AA: Providence (the only #1 section seed to win a title); and A: West Central (#3 seed in 6A South). Notice all three of these winners came from section 6. Also now section 6A seeds 1-17—no more north and south.

Here is a handy spreadsheet on what is happening.
