ABOUT LAST NIGHT….A QUARTERS
I was at the A quarters yesterday and they went according to script except for the final game of the day where #6 Central MN Christian topped #3 Kelliher/Northome. The As featured the only tournament with all eight teams as the #1 seeds AND all ranked in the final poll. The starts were essential Thursday. #1 Mt. Iron-Buhl was smoking hot in the first half in their win over Braham scoring the first nine points and building what turned out to be an insurmountable 53-22 halftime lead. They needed all of that as the tables abruptly turned in the second half. The Rangers first half pp100 was 143.2 (starters and even better 170.4). The second half it was definitely colder for MIB with only a 53.7 pp100 (which was lower than the Bombers first half totals of 57.9). In game two between #4 Hillcrest Lutheran and #5 NRHEG again the first nine minutes told the tale. The Comets were up 16-9 and by half they were on their way with a 40-19 lead. The Panthers were not at full strength with twin Camryn Vanmaldeghem out with a knee injury suffered in the section 1 final. HLA has balance and strength. They also are out of 6A which was home of last year’s state champion West Central. WC also was a #4 seed last year. Is lightning (or Comets) ready to strike again? Game three had the best pp100 for a losing team with Mayer Lutheran notching 90.5. The Crusaders were even better in the first half right at 100, but Morgan Mathiowetz was sizzling with 28 points—in the first half at 43-33. MM has a lethal step back 3 and that proved to be fatal for ML. It was a good night for the Knights with the best pp100 for the day at 112.5. Game four featured frenetic energy fourfold with CMC topping KN. KN set the pace with their full court defense. The Mustangs forced 31 turnovers on the day, but CMC had a reliable hand at the steering wheel in Sienna Duininck. Despite the Bluejays 10.77 touches per turnover once they took shots they were gold. They shot 55.3% on 2s and 50 (5/10) on 3s. KN turned it over on 23 times and their touches per turnovers were better at 15.74, but their shooting was not at the level of CMC with only 30.9% on 2s and 34.8% on 3s. Their reward will be a rematch with SESM. The Crusaders have been the only team to beat the Knights—a four point game at home.
With NRHEG & KN checklisted I have now seen all 32 teams that made the state.
| Team | PP100 |
| Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s | 112.5 |
| Hillcrest Lutheran | 109.2 |

| Mayer Lutheran | 90.5 |

| NRHEG | 73.3 |
31 CLUB
Every game featured a 31 Clubber with only Mayer Lutheran failing to provide a player in the eleven. In fact, there were two players in the 41 Club and three that made the even higher 51 Club. Kate Thayer just missed the 61 Club by one. She had 29 points and 21 d stops of which 13 were steals—clearly the top marks in both categories yesterday. The best pp100 in the group belong to Ella Knutson of HLA with a 187.5. She ended up with 15 points and was 5/6 on 2s, 1/1 on 3s and 2/3 at the line. Elin Retzlaff scored 31 points or one point every 1.61 touches. That was even better than the 2.15 touches by Morgan Mathiowetz of SESM who had 41 points in the Knights win. HLA also had a trio (including the sisterhood theme from yesterday) in the 31 Club. NRHEG had two members as the only other squad with multiple entries.
