CAMDEN 5, HMONG COLLEGE PREP ACADEMY 2
Camden opened their season with a home court victory over Hmong College Prep Academy 5-2. HCPA has a new coach in Jundu Vue. His wife is a former player at Minneapolis Patrick Henry (the name prior to Camden) Sandy Xiong. Xiong was the Minneapolis City singles champion in 2014. She was also a volleyball player for me at that school. Despite all the reunion conversations it was the Patriots’ Day on St. Patrick’s Day with a convincing sweep at doubles, and the even singles in putting together their victory. This also was a turnaround from last year where HCPA beat Camden.
Camden had five of the six sets where they had margins of over 10 points. The singles contest was much tighter. It featured the only three set match, which was won by Camden and the only extra point set, again won by Camden. Koenlendorfer’s three-set win at second singles gained steam as the night wore on with a 13-point margin in that third set. The extra point set came at fourth singles in the second set where Rose Pha outdueled Analee 26-24.

FIRST SINGLES
Cody THAO 2, Lisa PHA 0 (21-13, 21-17)
HCPA’s Cody Thao rallied in the second set to win this match in two. Thao closed the second set with a 11-1 run to secure the victory. The match started with Pha missing her first two serves. That opened the door for Thao with the first run coming on her second service which built a 5-2 lead. Thao did not allow Pha any runs in the first set and kept adding to her lead. Thao slammed the door figuratively with a side out score of 8/11 in the first set. The drive proved to be the favorite winner in this set for Thao with six total.
Pha shook off the slow start in set one and made up with two straight runs to open the second set and building a 7-1 lead. Pha kept Thao bottled up, not allowing any runs. But fatigue set in late. Pha was sending birds to the upper right zone. Thao had nine smashes in the second set, six of them coming after trailing 16-10. And four of those smashes were on the third stroke. In fact, the final six points were all on the third stroke.
Thao had better numbers with side out, and winners (+15). This match did not really involve long rallies. In fact, 25 points of the 75 were decided in two strokes. Also, timing proved to be an issue for both players, especially when moving back. Thao had seven fans, Pha four.
