Badminton Out & About: Edison v South 4.6.2026

EDISON 7, SOUTH 0

Minneapolis schools were back from spring break and host Edisondid not miss a beat as they evened their season conference mark to 2-2 with a convincing sweep of visiting South who move to 1-2 on the year. The Tommies overwhelmed the Tigers at singles holding them to single digits in six of the eight sets. South fared somewhat better in the doubles side of the equation with only two sets failing to get to double digits. The tightest match of the day came at third doubles with an average margin of six points.

I have now charted five of the seven Minneapolis City schools.

FIRST SINGLES

Lisa VICKERS 2, Audrey RATHJEN 0

(reported 21-7, 21-7, recorded 21-6, 21-7 )

Edison’s Lisa Vickers held South’s Audrey Rathjen to limited production in several categories in a massive sweep. Rathjen was unable to generate any juice off her service. Vickers slammed that door shut twelve times in thirteen tries. Vickers only allowed three winners all match while racking up an impressive 34. Also, Vickers held Rathjen to zero runs. This match was over fast.

Vickers ran off the first four points leaving no doubt in the outcome that was about to transpire. She got the side out on a two-stroke clear and added an ace to her mix. The lead was at double digits on Vickers second service with an avalanche of points to make it 12-2. By that stage Vickers rang up five smashes, moving aggressively to the net to cage her opponent. The odd thing about this set’s scoring: of the six points (I charted) for Rathjon five were on Vickers service errors, all falling short of the mark.

Despite the stress of the first set, Rathjen bounced back and led early in the second set at 2-1 earning her only point on serve all match and then out to 4-3 on another missed Vickers serve. Then the tide turned. Vickers picked up her first run of the second set on her fourth service to go in front to stay 8-4. She had two more runs with the final eight points cementing the victory. In that last run of eight three were aces including the final point that was deep (on a fan).

Vickers is now 3-1 on the year. Rathjen is still searching for her first victory of the season after three matches.
