FIRST SINGLES
Kpru PAW 2, Vivian NGUYEN 0
(reported 21-15, 22-20 recorded 21-15, 23-19)
Kpru Paw was one of the flippers today. In the first meeting with Nguyen it was the Eagle who won in three sets. Today it took two for the victory, but there were some oddities in this. Nguyen had more winners, 17-14 (even those numbers were low); and even had more strokes (125-124) a rarity for a losing player. Paw’s average count was almost a full strokes less than Nguyen. And the reason for that was the eleven service errors that were gift wrapped for Paw. In the second set of her first five points, three were on Nguyen serves that sailed deep. Paw had fewer two stroke winners 8-7 because she had eleven opportunities for a two stroke winner eliminated from her card. Paw overwhelmingly won the two stroke or less game 28-15, a difference of 13. Paw only had 16 points scored three points or more. Nguyen won the plus three stroke category scoring 19. Despite only scoring 14 winners, half were smashes which outperformed Nguyen’s five. On the error side of the equation, specifically the two stroke variety, Paw won that (low score wins) 4-10. Add those totals and Paw had 17 wins there, Nguyen 12.
Besides all the stroke counts Paw put together seven runs, four in the first set, three in the second. Nguyen only could generate one run in each set. The first came on her fifth service in set one with a run of four. That gave her a 9-8 lead. Paw responded shortly after with a run of three followed by another run of three on consecutive services putting her in front to stay 15-12. On more run (making it three in a row) left no doubt.
It looked like Paw might run away with the second set considering the sputtering service game. She had two runs by her fifth service and led 9-4. Nguyen’s only run in the second came on her fifth service and cut the deficit to 9-7. Nguyen’s side out game kicked it up a notch with six straight side outs, including three straight on the two stroke. That kept the Eagle in the game despite the service issues. She was able to tie it at 19. A four stroke clear broke the fever for Paw who then closed out with three more points for the victory, capped by a three stroke smash. Don’t ask me how this set continued on….I had Paw winning 21-19 yet the action continued.
Don’t be deceived by Kpru Paw’s record of 6-9. Six of those losses are against players currently ranked in the top four. Vivian Nguyen falls to 6-5 on the year. This is her third straight loss.
