#15 CAMDEN 5, #18 PARK CENTER 2
#15 Camden beat #18 Park Center in a neighborhood battle to advance to the sweet 16 round of the team badminton tournament tomorrow at Harding where they will face the #2 Knights. Park Center’s wins came in the middle of the singles while the Patriots swept the doubles and took the book ends of singles. Both teams split three set matches with PC’s Suzan Lee Solima topping Jeri Vang in third singles and the Camden first doubles pair of Aleena Yang and Diana Vang outlasting Zalo Vang and Audrey Xiong. This match featured four extra point sets with three going to the Patriots. The longest point totals of the day went to Jeri Vang, who took the first set 27-25 in her loss to Solima. In addition to that there was one other match decided by three points.
In margin Camden was helped in singles by Tia Koelendorfer’s 27 point differential at first singles. Without that spread, the Pirates would have ruled singles. Doubles had better margins for the Patriots, but still tight, especially at first doubles which was the final match to be determined. That spread was only three points across the three sets.

FIRST SINGLES
Tia KOELNDORFER 2, Sara BRENNAN 0
(Reported 21-7, 21-8 recorded 21-8, 24-8 )
Early in the season, Tia Koelndorfer played No. 2 singles for Camden, and Sara Brennan was not in the varsity lineup for Park Center. On Tuesday, both were at No. 1, and Koelndorfer kept Brennan in single digits. The reported score did not match the official recording, and Koelndorfer appeared to play past the needed points in the second set. At one point the agreed score was 18‑7; after Koelndorfer won the next rally, the score was changed back to 17. Koelndorfer dominated in runs (7‑0), service points (34‑5), and winners (31‑6). There was little drama, though the second set began tightly: Brennan led 4‑1 and won the longest rally, a 12-stroke clear on the second point. After a 6‑6 tie, Koelndorfer broke it open with a six-point run on her fifth service turn, then an 11-point run on her sixth service that continued even after I had charted the set as over at 21‑7.
Koelndorfer held at least a five-point edge in aces, clears, and smashes, and Brennan did not score on power shots. Koelndorfer also kept her errors to 10.
Next up for Camden and Koelndorfer will be #2 Harding and top seed Gao Zhia Vue in singles.
Also, today I had a reunion with my former volleyball assistant and current head boys and girls volleyball coach at Camden Lisa Minnema—Camden badminton coach Michael Minnema’s wife. It was her fiftieth birthday today and in the house a former player of mine Molly Minnema, currently playing volleyball at the University of Sioux Falls.
