Badminton Out & About: Edina vs Minneapolis Henry 4.13.2017

EDINA 6, MINNEAPOLIS HENRY 1

Edina continued to pick up victories against Minneapolis schools on Thursday with Henry the latest victim. The Hornets took all matches save the third doubles which went the Patriots way in three. There was only one other three setter and that came at third singles. This match was a change of pace from the recent bouts of double digit margins across all sets. Today only five sets did get to double digit land, and all fell into the Hornets camp. Edina also took the two tight sets, which both occurred in the first sets at first and third singles. Edina led 7-0 after the first sets were over. Edina rotated some players today at doubles that don’t normally get on the varsity action.

With the charting of Henry, I have seven teams left to see. The estimated time of completion on that task is Monday, April 24.

FIRST SINGLES

mia COMA 2, julie VANG 0
(21-18, 21-8)

Edina’s Mia Coma survived a rocky serving performance in the first set to get the two set win over Julie Vang. Coma missed on seven serves in the first set. Take away the service game and Coma took care of business in the most important categories like side outs and winners.  Coma spread her winners around with a high of seven smashes followed closely behind with six clears and drives. Vang only had six winners for the match. Any rally that lasted five strokes or more went to Coma. The two serve/receive game was close, but if we jut looked at one stroke points, Vang won 10-4.

The first point of the game caught Coma off guard as Vang served short for an ace. Vang kept that lead until 16-14. Then Coma rattled off five more points after a side out (20-16). Vang again had the quick lead in the second set at 2-0, but it didn’t take Coma long to establish herself. She cut back on service errors in this set (only two) and had her longest run of the day (nine) to build a 13-3 lead. She worked the smash game for six winners as Vang was getting the bird up and not cleared to the back line.
