VB Out & About: Apple Valley Eagle Invitational 9.23.2017

APPLE VALLEY EAGLE INVITATIONAL

The Eagle Invitational has been a good indicator of who will be champion in the AAA state tournament. This year the preliminary indications are that #2 Eagan, the two time defending champion, may be looking at a three peat as they bumped off previously undefeated and #1 ranked Lakeville North in the title match.

The South Suburban was well represented in the EI with six teams in the mix including the two finalists. I charted three all SSC match ups on the day and charted seven new teams. Don’t expect me to hit the top 40 teams this year (see below). If I can hit the top 20 I will be happy.

Just to keep you in the loop: The only real time I can go out & about is weekends this year. For the last two weekends the Henry-Fair volleyball team was in action at a pair of tournaments. During the weekdays, when we aren’t playing, I am unable to get out of the gym for any game on time. Right now I am running practice for three teams and that means my triple header practice schedule doesn’t let me out until well after 7 pm after breakdown/clean up. I don’t expect to be out & about on the weekdays until after the regular season is over. Then practice will be over at a more manageable 5:45 pm. Also I am in the middle of taking master’s courses, so my time is chewed up writing for instructors. Until then this is your chance to feast.

(5/6/7) SHAKOPEE 2, PRIOR LAKE 0 (25-18, 25-23)

#6 ranked Shakopee dropped #7 Prior Lake in the first South Suburban match up I charted on the day. The Sabers used a 12-3 run to break an eight all tie in the first set. Shakopee again had a strong start to the second frame with PL forced to call time out down 15-8. The Lakers made it interesting with a 9-3 run to make it 20-18 and initiating the second Saber time out. PL closed the gap to one, but Rachel Kilkelly ended the match with a first swing kill.

SEMI: EAGAN 2, LAKEVILLE SOUTH 0 (25-11, 25-14)

Round two of the SSC match ups featured a revenge/grudge match. LS dropped then #1 Eagan in an extra point five setter last week. The Wildcats left no doubt today who was to advance to the championship game. Eagan had six runs of three or more in the first set, and forced both time outs for LS at 17-9 in the second.

(11/12/13) MARSHALL 2, BETHLEHEM ACADEMY 1 (17-25, 25-17, 15-11)

Two coaching legends (Dan Westby and Franz Boelter) met for the second time this year and the #3AA Tigers upended the #4A Cardinals in three. In the first tussle in Faribault, Marshall prevailed in five sest. BA led the entire first set. The key separation came with a 5-1 run to push the score to 18-13. Marshall fixed the hole they dug for themselves in the second set getting out to a lead of 8-4. BA trailed 10-6 in the final frame, but strung together five straight with Haley Lang at the line. After a missed serve the Tigers didn’t give the ball back scoring the next four points.

3RD: LAKEVILLE SOUTH 2, MOORHEAD 1 (21-25, 27-25, 15-9)

I came into this match in the middle of the first set. LS led 14-10 when a run of six put the Spuds in front for good. Moorhead was on the verge in the second set, but the #5 Cougars held off the #13 Spuds for four match points in a come from behind victory. Earlier in the second set LS trailed 17-11. A key run of five led by three points from the Cougars’ Ava Moes lifted them to a 9-4 lead.

1ST: EAGAN 2, LAKEVILLE NORTH 0 (31-29, 25-19)

#2 Eagan rallied for a first set extra point win and then rallied with a 13-3 finish in the second set to take the EI championship. A pivotal time out with Eagan down 16-13 in the second set was the turning point. Kennedy Orr provided a jolt for Eagan with two blocks in the next three points  and then added a side out kill to tie it at 17. LN had to burn through both time outs when Libero #22 (not listed in program) was serving for Eagan. The second time out stopped the five point surge, but the Panthers were not to score off their serve again.

The first set also had the drama of a championship match with Eagan forced to call time after a slow start and LN up 7-3. Again Eagan had to stop the Panthers’ momentum with a time out down 18-14. The Wildcats didn’t garner their first lead until a run of five points inched them forward at 21-20. Orr was at the service line then. LN stopped the run with a time out. Eagan had three set point opportunities and didn’t cash in. LN then had two chances but Orr and McKenna Melville answered with first swing side out kills. Eagan had two more set point chances with a block by Peyton Rude delivering the final blow.

There will be at least one more rematch between these two SSC foes. The Wildcats will host the Panthers on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
