BLAINE TOURNAMENT, Saturday 9.30.2017
Today I was going to go to two tournaments—it was going to be a
NW Suburban day with an emphasis on schools in the Blaine area. I made it to my first destination Blaine High School and caught two contests in the six school field. I then made my way over to Centennial High School on the other end of Blaine only to find no games. There tournament was at the middle school, but I vacated with a looming grad paper needing attention. Therefore you only get two O&A today.
ST. MICHAEL-ALBERTVILLE 2, ROSEVILLE 0 (25-16, 27-25)
The main purpose to going to Blaine today was to see STMA, the #13 team in the QRF. The Knights got off to a quick start in the first set rattling off seven straight points and forcing a regrouping time out. The Raiders had to play catch up after that. Roseville is adjusting to life after Bre Maloney. They had 16 kills on the day, half as many as the Knights. It should also be pointed out that STMA had more senior players (5:1) while Roseville is green with a reliance on sophs and under (5:3). It started to look like a repeat in the second set as STMA jumped off to a 3-0 start. Roseville responded with a run of four and maintained a lead throughout until the end. STMA took a time out at 15-11. Roseville enjoyed a 20-15 lead when the wheels came off with their sixth rotation receiving. Lexie Nelson, after her own side out kill, then went to the service line and ran off four more to even the set at 20. Roseville still had a chance, but Maren Saunders, scoring her only point of the match on a block, held off set point. A miscommunication on a juicy marshmallow ball to the heart of the court dropped for advantage STMA. After a missed serve, Nelson gave STMA another crack at match point with a setter dump, her third of the set. Samantha Palmer finished with a kill.

BLAINE 2, WAYZATA 0
(25-21, 25-19)
Again it was experience (at least by a year) over youth. Blaine, with a reliance of juniors, knocked off Wayzata in two sets. The Trojans use sophs more often (6:2 compared to Blaine). In the first set both teams let the other team gather runs of three unimpeded. Side outs on the first ball were rarities. The Bengals had five runs in their first six services. Wayzata had three in their first five, with the first two services endeing either deep or in the net. Blaine was cruising along at 22-14 when the Trojans made a last ditch effort to get back in the game. A 7-2 run down the stretch closed the gap to 24-21 before a Bengal time out halted the momentum. Quay Murphy finished the first set with a kill for Blaine.
With both teams at a dozen, the host Bengals didn’t break away in the second set until a 8-2 push. That gave Blaine a 20-14 lead and it was only a matter of time after that. Blaine’s side out game shut the door on four of the next five Wayzata servers with Isabella Erne terminating three times for Blaine, two on first swings.
