VB Out & About: 5 Games from the Chaska Tournament

5 GAMES FROM THE CHASKA TOURNAMENT

Today was the end of the regular season weekend tournaments and

final tune ups were made for the upcoming section tournament. In other years my team was involved in the Rochester Century Tournament. This year, for the first time in 14 years we did not travel. That meant I was able to head to Chaska to see six new teams including the top ranked team in A—Mayer Lutheran. The other teams to get a first chart included host Chaska, Bemidji, Belle Plaine, Cretin-Derham Hall, and Stewartville. Added into that mix I charted the Champlin Park versus Stillwater semifinal. Unfortunately I had to leave after that so the title match between last year’s AAA finalists Eagan and CP was unseen. Eagan ended up with their first win over CP in the last three years with a 25-21, 25-15 sweep.

I charted three games in pool play and one each in the 5-8 and 1-4 brackets. The first two pool games were open and shut cases with both Mayer Lutheran and Stewartville grabbing huge leads early and never trailed. There were two three set matches on the day: The hosts fell to Mayer Lutheran to wrap up all pool play and then the CP/Stillwater semifinal.

At this point I need to see eight teams to get to the top 20 teams (QRF).

MAYER LUTHERAN 2, BEMIDJI 0
(25-10, 25-14)

#1A Mayer Lutheran held Bemidji to 12 earned points in the sweep in the first match in the fourth pool. The Crusaders broke the game open in the first set in the third rotation when Mya Chmielewski served 13 straight points to push the ML lead to 17-3. The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 start in the second set and added a six point burst later (18-9) to put the game out of reach.

#3AA Stewartville replicated the same scenario in the first game when they held CDH to only 12 earned points in their sweep over the Raiders. Stewartville liberally rotated during the match. In set one a 13-1 avalanche put the Tigers up 16-4. Set two was similar with a seven point Stewartville burst to take a 12-3 lead. CDH only had one run in the match.

MAYER LUTHERAN 2, CHASKA 1
(25-16, 21-25, 15-13)

#1A Mayer Lutheran spoiled Chaska’s home tournament with a three set win. The Crusaders closed out the first set with the last five points as they out earned the hosts 21-13 even though Chaska won more first swing kills in the set 8-5. A 7-1 burst turned a deficit into a three point lead (18-15) for Chaska in set two. Set three was a see-saw affair with both teams holding leads. A five point burst by Chaska inched them forward at 11-10. Dana Schindler had two of her day high 17 kills in the run. Both teams resorted to tip kills down the stretch and Olivia Tjernagel provided a key first swing (or tip) kill. A hitting error gave ML an advantage. Two consecutive first swing (I mean tip) kills gave ML the ball back (13-12). A block by Claudia Stahlke and Martina Saulsbury forced Chaska to use their last time out. A kill by eighth grader Mallory Heyer gave hope, but Madi Beck’s kills sent ML to the final four.

CHASKA 2, BELLE PLAINE 0
(25-15, 26-24)

Chaska bounced right back in the Fifth place semis with a sweep of Belle Plaine. This was not a garden variety sweep like the first two matches of the day. In set one Chaska zoomed out the lead with seven consecutive points to lead 7-1 and forcing a BP time out. The Tigers clawed their way back into the match, narrowing the gap to 16-14. Four consecutive Tiger hitting errors gave a cushion for Chaska. The only extra point set of the day followed when Chaska almost saw their victory vanish. The Hawks led 22-14 when BP ran off nine consecutive points to inch forward 23-22. Twice in that run Chaska tried in vain to stop the momentum. Dana Schindler stopped the bleeding with a side out kill. Chaska had one set point opportunity end up as a missed serve (24-24). Schindler once again reclaimed the ball for Chaska with a first swing kill.

CHAMPLIN PARK 2, STILLWATER 1
(19-25, 25-23, 15-10)

In a game with potential state seeding implications, #6AAA Champlin Park rallied to defeat #5AAA Stillwater. This was the third meeting between the two with each team picking up a win.  It looked like the Ponies would claim this game when they led 22-18 in the second set, but the Rebels rallied with a 7-1 finish to get momentum into the third set. Leading the charge in that comeback was Emma Schmidt with a first swing kill followed directly by another kill and then an ace by Kaitlyn Weimerskirch. Stillwater used their final time out at that point, which did get the ball back, but Schmidt again delivered a first swing kill for the next side out and the spark for the next three points.

The rhythm of this match had CP providing eight of Stillwater’s first 10 points in the first set with six hitting errors and two service errors. That ratio flipped in the deciding third set. CP made use of four straight (not consecutive) Pony errors to grab an 8-5 lead and force a time out. Stillwater closed the gap to 9-8, but four consecutive points put the Rebels near the finish line at 13-8.
