FOUR GAMES FROM ROCHESTER
Sections 1A & 1AA traditionally play on Saturday, the only sections
that go on the first playoff Saturday. Today was subsection semis day with all the favorites continuing on their quest for a section title. In the four games I charted there were two times the opposition took a set. There were 2 two point margins, and one set that went to extra points. 15 players reached double digits in scoring with Peyton Suess of Kasson-Mantorville topping all players with 22 points, all on kills & 11 of those were on first swings.
I spent my time on the 1A side of the dual court at the Mayo Civic Arena for three games. The biggest fish to be crossed off the QRF list was #35 Hayfield. I went with the higher teams in the other match ups.
CALEDONIA 3, SPRING GROVE 0
(25-11, 25-20, 25-15)
#1 Caledonia swept #4 Spring Grove in the 10 am opener. The Warriors set the tone with a 16-4 start and runs of 3, 5 and 8. The ease of that success led to a little complacency in the second set as SG ran off four straight to take a 9-5 lead and forced the only Caledonia time out of the day. Directly after that time out the Warriors re-established their imprint on the game with a run of six followed by another run of four (15-10). Madisyn Heaney ended up with seven of her game high 16 kills in this set. SG closed the gap to 18-16, but the Lions had issues with allowing runs. Caledonia had five in the set, and 12 for the match. The third set however see their first run until Caledonia notched four straight (14-8). SG couldn’t get their offense clicking with any runs in the set.
For the match Caledonia outearned SG by 32 points, the highest margin of the day.

MABEL-CANTON 3, FILLMORE CENTRAL 1
(23-25, 25-17, 25-12, 26-24)
#2 seed Mabel-Canton survived a sluggish first set, and then squeaked out a fourth set extra point win to move on to next Thursday’s 1A East championship. The Cougars didn’t really get their motor revved up until trailing 24-17 in the first set. MC almost pulled a rabbit out of their hat by holding off set point six straight times. After the second FC time out, the serve sailed deep to give the Falcons their only win in the match. FC used that momentum to grab a 5-1 lead in the second set, but MC was able to generate runs on their next five services. The back breaker came on a seven point surge with Maddy Michels getting three kills in the burst. MC burst loose in the third on a nine point run (16-6). FC didn’t help their cause with four hitting errors in that stretch. MC led 13-8 in the final frame when a missed serve opened the door for a six point FC run and a FC lead at 14-13. MC answered right back with three straight kills from three different players. It looked like the Cougars had the situation in hand with a 19-16 lead, but a FC time out rejuvenated the Falcons who took advantage of two straight MC hitting errors and added two kills to go up 20-19. The game evolved into a side out war at this point with MC getting the lead back again at 23-22 on a kill by Payton Danielson after a FC net violation. The final point came on Savannah Slafter’s kill.
Three different Cougars had double digit kills. MC’s serve receive game also was a factor with eight aces.

This could go to a number of players, but Maddy Michels gets the nod with six kills in the final set, four on first swings including two after MC trailed down the stretch.

HAYFIELD 3, GRAND MEADOW 1
(25-10, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21)
#1 Hayfield slipped by #4 Grand Meadow in the first 1A west subsection action. The Vikings dominated the first set with a 12-1 burst (20-7) that put the SuperLarks on notice they had no intention of turning in their uniforms today. A 19-5 earned point total reinforced that notion. Hayfield created separation in the second set with the first run of the set (seven points) to take a 17-11 lead. The Vikings tacked on four more after a side out for a cumulative 11-1 statement. But the Hayfield focus was misplaced in the third set. With the Vikings up 13-9 things started to go haywire for Hayfield. GM scored five straight (with two aces) and after a side out (started by a missed serve) added six more for a convincing 20-14 lead. The 20 win SuperLarks were not to be denied. Maggie Streightiff almost lifted the Vikings back to life with four kills in the last five Hayfield point including two with set point on the door step. On the fourth attempt GM broke through and a sweep was avoided. There were six lead changes in the final set. The Vikings grabbed the lead at 7-6 and never trailed after that. There was only one run in the set and that was a four point bump by Hayfield to give them separation (18-13). The lead got to six before GM cut it to three.
Three Vikings ended up with double digit kills.
Next up for Hayfield is Bethlehem Academy on Thursday for the 1A West championship. The Cardinals lost to Hayfield last year in that game. Revenge may be in the air (other than burning leaves or snow for that matter).

KASSON-MANTORVILLE 3, CANNON FALLS 0
(25-19, 25-20, 25-18)
In my only excursion into the AA world today, #2 Kasson-Mantorville swept #3 Cannon Falls in 1AA West action. Both teams were close when it came to earned points. But the defending 1AA section champs, once they got the lead made it difficult for the Bombers to keep up. The first set started with KM scoring the first three points. Peyton Suess had eight of her day high 22 kills in that set. CF’s only leads in the match came in set two. Their last came at 6-4. KM took control in the second set with a five point run to make it 11-7. Suess did one better in this set with 9 kills. KM and CF traded three point runs in the third set (15-14). The KoMets strung together six straight (22-15) and CF used their last time out trying to reign them in. The Bombers did have a last gasp run of three (22-18), but Suess gave the ball back on a kill and KM finished the night with a block and kill by Caroline Braun.
KM ended up with 10 runs to 6 for CF. The Bombers spread their points around the line up, but Suess was too much for the CF defense to control.
Next up is #1 Stewartville for the 1AA West title on Thursday.
