VB Out & About: 4AAA Semifinals: North St. Paul, Stillwater Win

4AAA SEMIFINALS 10.30.2017

Monday’s are not a popular day for section games because coaches

like to have at least one day of preparation for the game. Only two sections were in operation today, and I needed to see three of the 4AAA semifinalists so it was off to Stillwater. There was one upset in that a #3 seed topped a #2 seed and both contests used the brooms.

I also have the receivers wins and kills they initiated in the stats tonight.

NORTH ST. PAUL 3, MOUNDS VIEW 0
(25-17, 25-17, 25-11)

#3 seed North St. Paul got revenge on #2 Mounds View in the first contest of the night. Earlier this year NSP fell to the Mustangs in five. Tonight it was the serve/receive game that pulled the Polars through. NSP racked up a whopping 16 aces, and won the one touch points 21-8. On top of that the MV passers forced setter Ellie Horita to scramble all over the court. MV also was plagued with a couple of rotational aces, something a spectator might expect in September.

MV looked to be in control in the first set with a 16-11 lead, but then the roof fell in. After a two touch dump by Bria Sandifer, the Polars went on a 14-1 binge.  Charisma Herr finished off at the service line for 11 of those points. The second set didn’t break open until seven straight NSP points gave them a 14-5 advantage. Four of those points in that sequence were one touch (one missed serve/three aces). NSP led 20-7 when MV came back to life starting with a run of five. The final set saw NSP getting runs from their second through fifth server. Selena Rodriguez was the avalanche leader with seven points off her serve including the first three going aces. Rodriguez ended up with a double double with 10 aces and 11 kills for 21 points, high for the night.

NSP is now 25-3 on the year. MV ends up at 19-8.

STILLWATER 3, TARTAN 0
(25-16, 25-8, 25-15)

#1 Stillwater advanced to the 4AAA title game against NSP with a sweep over Tartan. The Ponies sided out 12 straight times in the second and part of the third set shutting down any point generation for the Titans. Four players for Stillwater ended up with double digits for the night with both middles combining for 27 points. The Ponies were giants at the net with eight blocks. Tartan had two leads, both in the second set and both after Stillwater failed to score off their serve—the last coming at 2-1.

Stillwater was able to squeeze points off their first five servers in the first set as middles Brooke Aschenbrenner and Reece Koehler racked up an impressive ten kills between them. Ponies like to run and in the second set they had five runs. Stillwater also earned 21 points in that set. Tartan, in the third set, did not allow a Stillwater run until the Ponies led 13-9. Then a run of four put Stillwater in the driver’s seat at 17-9. Tartan’s only time out came at 23-14 when the shadow of victory loomed large for Stillwater.

Stillwater takes a 21-8 mark to the title game. Tartan wraps up their season at 18-10.
