6AA West Subsection Semis
ROCORI 3, SAUK CENTRE 1
(25-15, 28-26, 18-25, 25-18)
#1 seed ( and #5AA) Rocori dodged a bullet in the second set and won in four against a persistent #5 seed Sauk Centre in 6AA West action. SC led 23-18 only to have a Halloween style nightmare on Mainstreet with six straight Rocori points. The Spartans rode the big swing of Eleanor Holthaus who cranked out 39 kills including 15 first swing kills. It didn’t matter where she was on the court, the future Iowa State player preferred to ricocheted balls off blockers and then have the balls carom off back row defenders. She also ripped shots from the back row. In the second set she had seven straight earned points for Rocori (not consecutive points, SC had some side outs in between and also had a few gifts interspersed).
The first set was all Rocori as they opened with the first six points of the night. There was only one SC run in this set and that only closed the gap to four (9-5). Holthaus provided nine kills in the first set. In the second set it was the Streeters that set the temp with a run of five after the opening point. Another five point run by SC gave them their largest lead of the night at eight (13-5). Rocori’s 17th point was a over reach by SC which the SC bench disagreed with. The Streeters soon bounced back with four straight points even with a Spartan time out (23-18). Then it was Holhaus to the rescue. She go the first swing kill for the side out & then served up the next five points for their second lead of the set (24-23). SC didn’t surrender, holding off three set points. It was Holthuas that capitalized on set point four for Rocori with her 13th kill of that set. In the third set Holthaus didn’t record her first kill until Rocori’s 11th point. By that time the Spartans were in the hole 16-9. SC had three runs with a run of five the main impetus. The Streeters held Holthuas to only six kills in this set. In set four Rocori didn’t waste any time getting Holthuas involved in the offense with the first point of the set. She delivered the first six points for Rocori, but that only tied the set at six. She then went and added three more off her service. Holthaus’ arm was finished after her 11th kill in the set (to make it 16-10). SC burned their last time out at 20-14.
The SC season started and ended with Rocori. The Streeters lost to Rocori in two at the Albany tournament in August. SC was ranked in the top AA 10 to start the year (as was Rocori).
How tough is 6AA West? Six of the eight teams in the subsection had over 20 wins on the year. That is the most in any class.
Rocori (25-4) moves on to face St. Cloud Cathedral in the subsection final. SC finishes the year at 22-9.
