SATURDAY SIX PACK FROM ST. THOMAS
Again this is going to be extremely brief. It is already past 1 am
Today I shifted gears over to St. Thomas for the Thanksgiving Tip-Off featuring seven games of Catholic teams. The only one I missed was the Cretin-Derham Hall vs Dowling Catholic game in the middle of the event. I was hoping to see Dowling Catholic Friday night but a home emergency forced me to cancel that plan.
This is the second Thanksgiving Tip Off and the event continues to grow. This year Dowling Catholic from Des Moines was here. Look for other Catholic powers from Iowa and Wisconsin to be invited.
Eight of the eleven Minnesota based teams have won a state title.
Here are the takeaways from today:
–Winona Cotter coach Pat Bowlin’s son Patrick is the new coach at Totino-Grace and the Eagles won their first game for their new coach.
—Hill-Murray cashed in ten 3s in the first half as they built up a 35-14 half time lead over Benilde-St. Margaret’s. HM was only able to scrape up one more in the second half. Both teams were 2010 AAA title game won by the Red Knights.
—-Players that scored 20 points (in the games I charted) saw their team lose. Kya Phillips of Cristo Rey Jesuit and Leigh Steiner of Holy Family both topped 20.
–DeLaSalle’s defense turned it up a notch in the second half. And that is over two days. The first seven minutes of each half the past two days, the Islanders have only allowed two points. DLS has added a few players to their roster—former Como starter Elaina Jones and former South guard Kiani Lockett. The Island is number one in AAA, but they trailed HF at one point in the first half by 10.
—I left the Cotter game at half to make it to Hamline to chart the Stillwater game. I then high-tailed it back to St. Thomas right at the tip off of the Hill-Murray game.
—-A day after being bumped off by Dowling, Holy Angels had the best team performance of the day topping the century mark. Two teams were above 90, but four were below 60.
