GBB Out & About: Irondale v Minneapolis Southwest 11.28.2017

IRONDALE 68, MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST 35

It was the only game in the state tonight and both teams were

coming off an opening loss the night before. Irondale, on the road, put running time on the Southwest Lakers. The Knights bounced back from a loss to another 6AAAA team, St. Louis Park last night. Richfield bumped off the Lakers in another running time contest for them yesterday.

Irondale dominated the glass with a +27 differential with 29 offensive boards. That was +13 more than the defensive totals for SW. With extra chances, the Knights cashed in. The only area in the game that the Lakers dominated was at the free throw line. They attempted 16 more free throws, but only converted at a 44% rate. SW still had +5 more made free throws than Irondale.

Southwest called their first time out with 11 minutes left in the first half down 12-6. It soon stretched to 23-8. Irondale got in some foul trouble at the end of the first half and had to sit prime contributors. The reserves defense permitted SW some life as the Lakers finished the half with a 13-5 run the last 3:18 of the half. That closed the margin to 32-24. The Irondale starters returned with a vengeance at the start of the second half. A 20-4 Knight start in the first six minutes of the second half cemented the win. Irondale opened the half scoring five times in their first six possessions.

Irondale was led by Sophie Findell and her 18 points (eight in the opening blitz in the second half). She dialed long distance four times converting at a 57% clip (with two at the start of the second half). The Knights were 50% as a team beyond the arc with six out of twelve.

The trend to younger teams continues unabated. SW’s starters averaged a whole year younger than Irondale. That physical differential and the game understanding/experience definitely played a part in the outcome.
