CHAMPLIN PARK 57, APPLE VALLEY 51
#15AAAA Champlin Park edged out Apple Valley 57-51 Tuesday night at home. The Rebels saw
a nine point (28-19) half time lead vanish as they fell behind by one forcing a time out. The Eagles opened the second half by scoring on five straight possessions (29-28). That lead lasted until CP’s next possession. Makayla Johnson scored her only points of the night. CP took advantage of a sputtering AV offense capped by three straight turnovers, the last two which ended up as steal and lay ups for Erica Hicks (43-32). After bouncing back to take an eleven point lead with seven minutes remaining, it was the Eagles turn to have a surge. AV sliced that lead down to 49-47 with 3:51 left as they scored on five straight possessions, the last of which was an &1 after a put back by Brynne Rolland. The Rebel defense held as they forced two straight turnovers while converting at the free throw line. That was where the biggest differential occurred on the night with CP attempting 24 while AV only got off five at the line. CP features two players that have already signed D1 offers: Gabby Mocchi is headed to Montana State, while Amanda Pollard is headed to Wagner. Both led the Rebels in the three prime categories. AV’s strength was their inside game. Brynne Rolland led all scorers with 24. AV did win the battle inside 15/30 to 13/34, but CP took on the ‘Runnin’ Rebel’ look with seven transition baskets to only one AV lay up.
The game featured summer teammates on the opposite side. During the summer of 2017 post players Makayla Johnson of CP and Mykel Parham and guard Megan Baer of AV played along side each other on the North Tartan 10 EYBL team. That wasn’t the only head to head: Pollard and Rolland teamed up with Metro Stars Wiese during the summer. With all the former teammates facing each other there was plenty of familiarity with each other’s quirks.
AV is still searching for new coach Bryan Doughty’s first win. They opened with a loss to Park-Cottage Grove. CP is now 2-0 on the young season.
