ST. FRANCIS 59, COON RAPIDS 44

#17AAAA St. Francis overcame a sluggish first half to top section

7AAAA rival Coon Rapids at home on Wednesday night. At the break the Cardinals held a slim 24-23 lead. CR built that lead on the back of post Elli Carver who ended up with 17 points on the night. How slow starting was this game? There were no points scored after six possessions. After five minutes CR led 9-5. The Saints got on track in the second half with the long ball. SF jumped ahead with the first four points of the second half. CR tied it at 27 with a three by Brooklyn Dixon. Junior guard Danah Ocsan answered on the very next SF possession with a three in the right corner. SF scored two more 3s to cushion their lead at 36-29. With 4:47 left in the game SF led 54-34—-a 27-7 surge. CR cut the margin to 54-42 with under a minute left, but could not slice any more off the lead.

CR led in three of the four categories with a +13 rebound differential, +16 field goal differential and one more free throw attempt. The biggest separation came in field goal percentage. SF came up with 43% from 2s, CR was only 24%. But it was even more severe than that. If Carver’s totals were eliminated from the count, CR was only 6/42 or 14%. It was warmer outside than CR’s field goal shooting.

Since this was a rivalry game, some of the action drifted to the more than physical. On three straight possessions in the second half there was an offensive foul away from the ball. A grand total of six offensive fouls were called in the game, which is a high for the year. Both teams had 19 fouls on the game.
