GBB Out & About: 5 games from the St. Olaf Tournament

ST. OLAF TOURNAMENT

Today was the last day of tournaments, and I headed to Northfield for five games with seven teams I had yet to chart. The problem was my computer didn’t.  I had to transcribe all the details by hand like it was 2005 and then translate them back to computer. That process is going to take longer than this evening. Not only did I leave the computer at home, but I left my medicine at home too. Yes I am alive. It was not a great start to the end of the year.

I originally had planned to chart this tournament on Friday, but I was unable to keep those plans due to a funeral on Friday.

So here is what happened today

GRAND RAPIDS 60, EAGAN 42

HOPKINS 74, BEAVER DAM 71 OT

FARMINGTON 56, PROVIDENCE 36

EASTVIEW 55, HASTINGS 28

NORTHFIELD 67, PRIOR LAKE 55

The way this tournament works is there are 10 teams, they all don’t play each other, so….teams that win get five points; if you hold an opponent under 45 a team gets 2 points in the standings; Get more assists than turnovers gets you three  points; and shoot 80 % at the free throw line equals 1 more point. Beaver Dam was three ahead of Eastview entering the day. But the Lightning ended up with the only unbeaten record after the Wisconsin team fell to Hopkins in overtime, therefore they are the champs of the seventh annual hoops classic.

Northfield and Farmington picked up their first wins of the three day event.

The most compelling game of the day had to be Hopkins v Beaver Dam. The out of state guests scored the first 9 points of the game and led 17-6 with 12:30 left to go in the first half. Hopkins closed the gap, but BD opened it again late in the half. The Beavers led 33-24 at the break. Then came the second half avalanche of points. The Royals scored on ten straight possessions and twelve of 14 chances to leap ahead 53-37 (translation: 19-4 run). Hopkins would push that lead out to 60-48 with 4:53 left. Then Hopkins decided to pull the ball. BD, getting desperate, was more aggressive on defense just as the Royals went to their freeze. A 13-1 finish to the regulation was the result. The game was sent to overtime after a put back by Vanloo at the buzzer. Once Hopkins started attacking again, the flood gates opened. They scored on each and every one of their seven possessions in the overtime, but still BD was nipping at their heels as time expired.

Eastview, fresh off their win over #1AAAA Hopkins on Friday didn’t miss a beat and stifled another H town, Hastings, holding the Raiders to 28 points.

The performance of the day didn’t go to a player on the winning side of the ledger. McKenna Hofschild ripped it up for Prior Lake in the loss to home town Northfield. The junior guard had a day high 32 points and also led her team in distributions and d stops. She surpassed the 51 Club for the day.
