GBB Out & About: Proctor v Esko 1.8.2018

PROCTOR 39, ESKO 36

I went for some northern exposure tonight with a 7AA match up. Visiting Proctor overcame a ten point (26-16) second half deficit to get a revenge win over Esko Monday night. That was with 12 minutes to go. The problem was Esko post Bridget Yellin, who scored 8 straight for the Eskomos, picked up her third foul and sat down. That opened the comeback trail for the Rails. They scored five straight points and all of a sudden they were back in the game. With eight minutes left Esko had a 30-23 lead. Esko decided to go with long possessions, and worked the ball around. Another five point burst initiated again by a 3 by sophomore lefty guard Sam Pogatchnik cut the margin to 30-28 with six minutes left. Proctor forced five straight turnovers and took the lead on an &1 by Katelyn Marunich 33-32. They added insurance on the fourth and fifth steal pushing the margin to 37-32. Esko regained some composure and was able to score again, but Proctor was in control and made enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

The first half did not have the same drama. Both teams shot below freezing early (Proctor 23, Esko 22). That is the main reason the Eskomos led at the break 15-12. Proctor struggled against the Esko 2/3 zone, while Esko didn’t take advantage of their opportunities against the Proctor man.

Proctor now is 8-4. This is the second time they faced Esko (in Esko) and this time they got revenge for a 41-32 loss in the championship game of the Esko Tournament on Saturday, December 30. Esko is 8-6 on the year.

Why this game? It featured two teams at 91 (Proctor) and 104 (Esko) in the QRF. This was the two highest teams that I could get to tonight—-two hours out. Four hours is two hours too many (Bigfork at home v Duluth Marshall).
