GBB Out & About: Sauk Centre v St. Cloud Cathedral 1.15.2018

SAUK CENTRE 76, ST. CLOUD CATHEDRAL 37

For the fifth straight game I charted a running time contest. What

makes this game different is that the teams involved had a combined 23-1 record going into the game. This was supposed to be a test. In fact, according to the QRF, St. Cloud Cathedral was higher ranked (44 to 60) than host Sauk Centre. The #1 Mainstreeters showed why they are the number one ranked team in AA with a convincing 76-37 victory over their 6AA opponent. The Mainstreeters were on easy street all night behind the arc hitting 15 for the game, and ten in the first half. Seven players in total connected behind the arc. And the Streeters were hitting at a 58% clip in the first half, 53.7% for the game behind the arc. SC found plenty of holes in Cathedral’s 2/3 zone. Balance was a watchword also for SC with four players in double digits. For those familiar with the pp100 eight players were north of 100; the one sub 100 player was at 92.

How fast did this game get out of hand? Cathedral used their first time out after three minutes down 12-2. After another time out one minute and twenty seconds later the Crusaders were looking at an 18-2 deficit. At the nine minute mark SC led 31-10 (nailing seven 3s). As has been the case in the running time games recently, the winning team had more than enough to win the game after 18 minutes of action. SC led 45-16 at the break. The game trajectory did not alter off course in the second half.

Usually I have headed to St. Catherine for the MLK/Fury showcase, but I was only missing one team in the four games there today, so I opted for a two-fer at SC. Coach Teas joined me on the journey today.

Sauk Centre is now 13-0 on the year. Of the 13 wins, the closest game the Streeters have had was an 80-70 win in a rematch of the AA State title game last year with Roseau. SC has topped 70 seven times (with three other games at 69). The lowest point totals they have this year is a 63-36 win over Annandale. Cathedral falls to 12-2.
