GBB Out & About: Hutchinson v Waconia 1.18.2018

HUTCHINSON 64, WACONIA 50

#9AAA Hutchinson topped #12AAA Waconia in a battle of

undefeated Wright County teams on Thursday night. As has been the case with the other three games this week I charted, the trey had a big impact. The Tigers won the battle of the cats with eleven 3s with five players taking part. Hutch shot 45% from beyond the arc. Waconia, converted a tepid 8% with only one cashiered. It was the second half when the shooting touch really kicked in for Hutch and broke the game open. The hosts led 27-23 at the break. In the first six possessions of the half Hutch scored 13 unanswered points including three 3s. The back breaker possession came after a steal, lay up & one chance. After a Waconia time out, MaKenzie Rensch, who led all scorers with 21 points, missed her free throw, but Gabby Hahn grabbed the miss, there was another miss and Hahn once again grabbed the rebound and found Elizabeth Wortz for a right corner three (40-25). Waconia was forced to play catch up after that. And comeback they did. Spearheaded by the intensity of sophomore Tess Johnson, who led the Wildcats with 16 points (12 in the run), Waconia cut the margin to 52-47 (a 22-12 run) with six minutes left. Johnson took a turn on the bench and Hutch pounced with eight straight points including two straight 3s with four minutes left (61-47). Once again it was an uphill climb for Waconia. There was to be no comeback this time.

Last year both of these teams were in section 6AAA. Hutch moved back to the traditional southwest corner of 2AAA this year.

Earlier this year I charted Hutch for a half in their win over St. Anthony in the Minnetonka breakdown event.

Hutch moves to 13-5 and is riding a six game winning streak. Waconia is 11-5 and has now lost two straight. The rematch is February 13 in Waconia.

I have now seen 74 of the top 100 teams.
