GBB Out & About: Norwood-Young America v Glencoe-Silver Lake 1.20.2018

NORWOOD-YOUNG AMERICA 55, GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE 44

In a key 2AA North battle, #9AA Norwood-Young America rallied in

the second half for a 55-44 victory over neighboring Glencoe-Silver Lake. With the win NYA holds a key advantage in upcoming seedings. This was also a test between the MN River Conference and the Wright County (West).

NYA had the early advantage with a lead as big as 15-8 midway through the first half. The Panthers however closed with a 19-9 run to move in front at the break 27-24.  Part of the GSL surge was better shooting. They were at 43% from 2s and made four 3s. GSL’s McKenna Monahan topped all scorers at the half with 10 (she also led all scorers with 19 for the game). The problem for GSL was only two other players scored more than two points, one of which was sister Miah with 10. NYA, by contrast, had four players in double digits led by Abby Mackenthun’s 14. The Raiders two scholarship athletes, Bren Fox (UM Crookston) scored 11 points and Kali Grimm (New Hampshire) had 10. Joining them in double digits was senior Anna Mackenthun.

There were three lead changes in the second half. Fox put the hosts up for good with a shot off the right side (39-37). The Panthers had a last gasp at the 6:18 mark when Miah Monahan hit a 3 from the right side (41-40). Abby Mackenthun answered on the next NYA possession with a triple from up top. She then nailed two consecutive 3s down the stretch to create some separation (52-44).

NYA  is now 15-3 on the year, 8-1 in section 2AA. GSL moves to 10-6 and 4-2.

In case you are wondering “Why only one game?” Stillwater played Princeton at 2 pm. As a result of these two games I have now charted 77 of the top 100 teams (Princeton and GSL were the new teams today. I charted NYA at the Hopkins Breakdown event).
