#4 ranked Ashley Nelson of Eden Prairie used her power game in a sweep over Southwest’s Lily Landis, currently #7. Nelson allowed the Minneapolis leader only one run and more than quadrupled her winner count 30-7. Nelson had 17 smashes on the day taking advantage of juicy birds delivered tight to the net. Despite the score, the match did feature more longer rallies than quick 30.3% to 25.8%. When it was longer Nelson won 11-9. Nelson dominated the fast, two stroke points 13-4.
Landis actually had the first, and as it turned out, her only run of the day and that propelled her into a 6-4 lead. Nelson responded with four straight points and took the lead for good at 8-6. A missed serve opened the door for a seven point Nelson run, and her biggest lead at 17-9. Landis closed out with a 5-4 advantage, but the hole was too deep and Nelson was on the door step.
After falling behind 1-0, Nelson ran off six straight, five of which landed as winners, and was in the driver’s seat the rest of the way. Landis could not gain traction on her serve, only squeezing off two service points in this set. Nelson added two more runs of four (12-5 and 18-8).
