FIRST SINGLES

Rachel WATERMAN 2, Mia COMA 0
(21-15, 21-16)

#6 Rachel Waterman of Burnsville defeated #9 Mia Coma by similar scores of 15 and 16, but the pathway to victory was different in each case. Waterman grabbed the lead with an opening run of four in the first set. In the second set she got her first lead at 8-7 and didn’t maintain the lead for good until a run of four put her up 12-10. Waterman had advantages in winners (+10) with four categories contributing five points or more. Clears led the way with eight. Coma had one category (the soft drive with six) that met that standard. Waterman’s side out game came in with an effective .727 mark. The first set was her best effort at .818. Coma’s service game was off with six errors on 31 attempts (.806). Coma favored the right side with her winners 75% of the time, and the front court 50%. Waterman’s winners slightly favored the right side of the court (54%).

After the run of four to open the match, Waterman tacked on another run of three on her third service to reach her widest margin in the set with six points (8-2). Coma generated a four point run capped by a line hugging ace to the right side (9-7), but a service error ended that surge. No one was able to garner another run in the first set, but Waterman was able to squeeze one point off serve four of her last five services and held Coma scoreless her last five services.

In set two Coma started off holding Waterman scoreless on her first three serves and that helped uild up a 5-2 advantage. After allowing a point on Coma’s first two serves, Waterman stopped her three straight times helping to take the lead at 8-7. Coma took advantage of Waterman hitting errors to get the first run of the set and was back in front 10-8. The missed serve opened the door for Waterman and she barged through with a 7-1 run over the course of two services (15-11). Both players were in side out mode until Waterman finished with the last three points. The second set featured more two stroke points than the first set. Twenty of the 37 points in the set were decided by two strokes or less (54%).
