Badminton Out & About: Harding v Central 4.18.2018

HARDING 5, CENTRAL 2

It was back to St. Paul for another Harding viewing on Wednesday. Today the #3 Knights were on the road at #5 Central and, in the words Dinah Washington, “what a difference a day makes.” Yesterday at home the Knights were broomed by #1 Johnson. Today they picked up a solid 5-2 win. The Knights were situated with five wins with Central taking the last two matches on the court, both three setters. There were four matches that went the distance today. Ester Htoo, Harding’s second singles, was the only player to lose the first set and then take the next two. The doubles matches were the most contentious with the separation only 1.125 points between the two teams across eight sets. The only set that went to extra points came at third doubles with Keri & Starry Her winning the marathon at 24-22.

FIRST SINGLES

Jumy MIKO 2, May GARVEY 0
(21-7, 21-19)

#4 Jumy Miko upended #3 May Garvey in a quick two setter. Miko bounced back from a two set loss yesterday to #1 Nou Chee Yang of Johnson. She also bounced back from a six points second set deficit to complete the sweep. The style of the win contrasted: in set one Miko raced off to a commanding 12-1 lead and produced 14 winners. In the second, with Garvey ramped up her power game and Miko responded by keeping the bird in play. As a result, she benefited from 16 errors. She only produced five winners in that frame, only two in the final 12-4 rush. Garvey came up with ten smashes on winners for the day, the most in any category for any player. Both ended up with 19 winners. The side out game was a difference maker. Miko, in the first set slammed the door with six of seven side outs. Miko trailed 15-9 and then 18-15 when a run of five pulled her in front. A two stroke smash by Garvey to back hand side held off match point. But Garvey’s serve was wide ending the contest.
