BADMINTON STATE TOURANMENT FIRST & SECOND ROUND
The 2017 state badminton tournament got underway today at eight different sites. Of the eight teams that hosted, seven will be moving on. The exception was #8 Highland Park who fell to #9 Burnsville 6-1. HP was without regular second singles player Lucia Catalyud, which forced the rest of the line up to play up a notch.
I traveled to Central for the anticipated #6 vs #11 match up with Edina. This site would also feature two of the top eight seeds in the individual portion of the state tournament #3 May Garvey of Central and #8 Mia Coma of Edina. The Hornets kept up their part of the bargain with a sweep over North. I have already put the box up on the results page.
Central moved on to the quarterfinals tomorrow with a nip & tuck battle with Edina 5-2. The clincher came at third singles when Annika Tuma picked up her two set win. There was only one three setter in the bunch and that came in after the match was decided. The Minutemen took the odd singles and grabbed all the doubles. The doubles proved to be tight with Central winning all four sets that were decided by three points or less.
I charted both first singles matches. The common denominator was obviously Mia Coma of Edina. And the stats seemed to do a 180. The interesting fact here is Coma piled up 32 winners in the first match against Tati Gross of North, but saw that number shrink to only three against May Garvey. Coma was unable to score off her own serve in the second set against Garvey.
