Badminton Out & About: Washington vs Edina 5.1.2018

WASHINGTON 5, EDINA 2

#2 Washington survived #8 Edina 5-2. Usually I write about the three setters. Today everything was three sets, but at second singles. The Governors took the first three singles and the odd doubles to put together their win. After the first set was tallied Edina was in the lead 5-2. The Eagles rallied at both first singles and doubles and third doubles to get the team W. A change of five points would have tipped the scales to Edina 4-3; nine points and it would have been 5-2 Hornets. Not one set was decided by 10 or more points. The steepest margin came at second singles, second set where Jansaree Na won by nine. The overall margins were similar in both singles and doubles with both under 1.6 differential per set. All this portends a bunched field for the upcoming state tournament with the separation between seeds razor thin.

FIRST SINGLES

BeBe SAY 2, Mia COMA 1
(17-22, 21-15, 21-17)

#3 BeBe Say pulled out the win despite stumbling in the first set. Say’s side out game improved during the match (as did Coma’s), but the Eagles overall numbers ended up 100 higher. Both players were even in winners and errors. What struck me interesting in this match was the location of Say’s winners. Her winners found the right side of the floor 84% of time. The right front corner seemed to be her favorite landing zone.

The critical portion in the first set came when Coma scored on five straight on her sixth service to go up 13-9. Coma, who had 15 of her 28 winners in this set, strung together one more three point run (18-13). At some point late in the match the two got off count, not once but twice. It did not impact the margin, but the final score really was 22-17.

Say shut down Coma’s winners in the second set from 15 to five. It was Say the revved up the run machine with a string of seven on her third service (10-3). The highlight in that run was an 18 stroke error point that sailed deep as both players made lunging plays to keep the bird off the floor. Neither player could generate a run after that.

Say opened with the first three points of the final set, but Coma got new life with a 7-1 run during service five and six (11-8). At the mandatory switch at 11 the momentum also switched. Coma would only score six more points while Say ran off 13 including runs of four, which put her back in front (15-13) and three (19-16).
