Badminton Out & About: Edina v Humboldt 5.14.2018

EDINA 5, HUMBOLDT 2

The badminton team portion opened on Monday and eight winners will advance to Burnsville tomorrow. #8 Edina will be one of the eight after a 5-2 win over #9 Humboldt. The Hornets built their win with a sweep of the doubles and the top two singles. The Hornets were missing #2 Johana Engstrom which moved everyone else up the escalator. The most competitive match of the day came at second doubles which was the only match that went the distance. Edina’s Maren Naegle and Arden Ruehl had to rally in the third set to claim the victory.

FIRST SINGLES

Mia COMA 2, Lay LAY 0
(21-14, 21-17)

There has been a change with Mia Coma. The Edina first singles has slowed down her game, is clear with her scores (there were no off scores) and is more aggressive. Today she ripped 11 smashes, or quick punches (5 total), on her way to a two set win over Humboldt’s Lay Lay. In all my charting this spring I don’t believe Coma had 11 smashes total. The aggressiveness also paid off in winners where she overwhelmed Lay Lay 30-7. On the flip side of that she also had more errors, but the winners were more abundant than those errors, so the ratio was greater than one.

Coma got out of the gate quickly with the first run of three for the day (3-1) with the new found aggressiveness paying off with an eight stroke smash. Lay tied it up at five where after Coma put together her longest run of the day with five points (10-5). Coma had one more run in her, this time a four point effort to stretch her lead to 16-9. Lay’s only run of the first set came late (18-13).

Lay looked to turn the momentum in her favor with the first four points of the second set. A four stroke clear from the front court ended that run and started a four point run for Coma. There would only be one other run in the second set, another Coma four pointer, to make it 10-7. Both players couldn’t get any traction, while both were able to squeeze at least one point on most services. Side out strings only lasted a best two cycles. Lay closed the gap to 17-15 when Coma put her foot down with a five stroke smash followed by a three stroke punch, both of which originated in the front court. I attempted to chart the location of the hit on the winner (or error) today and Coma’s punches all originated in the front court.
